A great many of these one-way travelers were fleeing religious persecution (obviously a few years later) - limited not necessarily so much by transportation technology, but by conviction to not bow to the governing church - and willing to die for it.
Haven't you gone to an elementary school Thanksgiving play lately? Oh wait - we can't talk about US Christian history in schools anymore.
"I have seen a number of "explanations" for these, all of them require the removal of a significant part of your brain."
I'm not sure why, but I'm compelled to respond - certainly since you've already determined I'm missing part of my brain - it's likely because I don't just like walking away from stuff like this.
Gen 1:1-2:2 covers the "when", and some of the "how" questions regarding the whole of creation. Gen 2:4+ is talking about the "who" and "why" questions regarding the creation of man.
As for order of Gen 2: God created Adam (WHO), and placed him in the garden he had planted (previously) in the east (2:8)...talk about the garden more..."to work it and take care of it" (WHY).
As for Jesus' comments on 'to not defraud' ? "The commandments" certainly can refer to the famous 10, or more generally to the whole of Levitical law - and for that matter to "not defraud" falls under both 'stealing' and 'false testimony'. My bet is that Christ knew in this situation which laws needed the emphasis to the 'rich young man' and was addressing them more than a commentary specific to Exodus 20. He knew the law better than you or I - and why call Jesus names anyway? (That's covered under the 10 too). But we're really getting OT here.
Lunch break is over. Thanks for making me think a bit more on the Bible today.
I keep seeing this 'contradict' word. How so? Gen 1 and 2 certainly provide different details, but I don't see where you find a contradiction. Is it elsewhere Biblically? Please quote the passages that contradict, instead of simply throwing that word out there.
It's a Christian preoccupation, because it is part of the historical theology and an essential part of the doctrine of salvation in Christ. (Though I also believe most current evangelicals do not know/understand this, and are still allowed to ride the bandwagon).
Romans 5:12-20 understands Adam to be a literal man, and a 'pattern of the one to come'(14). Take away 6 day creation, you remove a literal Adam, you remove original sin, and you remove the need for Christ.
Actually, yes, it does.
Genesis 1 and 2 clearly say it - both in the Hebrew and translated English - and proper exegesis of the rest of the Bible re-affirm the interpretation. In fact, to understand Christ (as he is presented as the second Adam) you really have to accept a six literal day creation, and a literal Adam created on the sixth day.
I know I have many brothers that disagree and attempt to mold the Genesis account in to day/epoch language, but they undermine the consistency of the Bible and the work of Christ in doing so.
I know I'm in a minority of a minority here, but PLEASE people - a "+4 Insightful" for the above post??? Open your Bible once and a while.
You are assuming people care that they don't understand. I support a 100+ users who just plain don't care to know or understand anything beyond their fingertips. Those that care have already been paying attention.
Bottom line is that don't want a PC, they want a toaster. Turn it on, put in bread, wait 30 seconds and out pops my toast. Every time.
I know not about all manufacturers, but I know HP keeps this information.
Not more than a couple months ago I had to contact them about a repair on an HP color laserjet, and all they needed was the serial number, and they knew purchase date, who the company was, everything. This was, of course purchased from a major supplier, by a company - so you could get around this by paying cash and wearing a baseball cap (don't look directly at those security cameras!) when you purchase it.
Most common use of your TV:
1.) No TV - just a HDTV tuner in my PC (geek answer)
2.) DVD viewing (Dad's answer)
3.) PBS viewing (Mom's answer)
4.) Porn viewing (Slashdot answer)
5.) Stand for my other TV (redneck answer)
6.) Football viewing (no-neck answer)
In 1990 (18 yrs old) I was sending email via packet radio across the country. This was all over a loose association wireless network...of course it was at 1200bps!
Before the 'net eclipsed everything and the introduction of really cheap hardware, ham radio was doing most everything we do today on the internet - SMS, broadcast video, voice, data - around the world.
But, yes, me too - now my DSL connection and cell phone have replaced my VHF rig and TNC.
(Disclaimer position: Christian, conservative (Bible=innerrant word of God), reformed (I'm protestant for a reason)...not likely 'fundemantalist' (I'll have a beer on occasion)).
Boy, that should set me up for a flaim.
The biggest frustration I have with these arguments is the assumptions made. Most on./ (Christian or not) come at this from a humanist or even atheist point of view. You look at the universe and try and understand God or ID from there. I, however, look at the Bible, and attempt to understand the universe. Our starting points are completely different.
Everyone begins this discussion with assumptions. If you start with 'billions' of years, a big bang, or evolution, you try and understand why God would try and trick you about all this stuff...
If you start with 6 days and God rested, you try and understand purpose and then the science (yes, real science) in light of what is observable and testable.
I cannot expect you to result in the same conclusions, nor can you expect me to - but explain why your solution is better, since neither one of us can *prove* our assumptions. Most of the technology and science (yes, real science) that we use every day was based upon the assumption that there was a creator. ID certainly has a longer track record.
I was hoping to point out that this sort population engineering has been thought through before (and lived out as some of the threads here have covered) and the horrid consequences also looked at.
My personal opinions on it were not shared. Of course I often have the problem of being being too subtle in my comments, or outright blunt in my position. It's that difficult balance I seem to lack.
The next logical step is eliminating 'natural' birth altogether. We separate sex (recreation) and childbearing (necessary for the species) by way of cloning (or some such method) then set up a caste system by which our new society can operate smoothly.
It's not a new idea. Read 'Brave New World' by Auldus Huxley - circa ~1932....
No, but unlike the European countries, the Americas were based upon religious liberty - and the pursuit of a theology, doctrine and practice without persecution.
Thank you for responding to the parent with the appropriate tone, humor, and bite which was needed without moving to the excessive soap-boxing to which I might be tempted.
The gas is actually to fuel all the SUV's that are planned to ship over there. Within a few years all the martians will be doing their local commute in Suburbans, one to a car, thus contributing to global martian warming.
I remember working dual monitors on a CAD machine in college in '89. Wasn't quite so geeky then, so don't remember the specs.
Heck - the same computer lab had a MAC Classic (or whatever...w/ built-in monitor) and a second page lay-out monitor connected to it, worked just as well as my current dual monitor setups now.
This is why I love Slashdot. The love. The sense of community. The maturity of it's members.
Right-wing, yes. Conservative, oh yes. Theocratic? Likely not.
I certainly don't fit in here theologically...but I do keep coming back.
My words:
Your words:
I'm glad we agree on everything.
[sarcasm]Oh. I'm sure we agree on everything.[/sarcasm]
Haven't you gone to an elementary school Thanksgiving play lately? Oh wait - we can't talk about US Christian history in schools anymore.
Where's my ticket?

I prefer this being the start of Starfleet over another World War, nuclear holocaust, the Borg going back in time, and meeting Vulcans.
What am I missing?
Plus (according to Novell) 69% less downtime than Exchange, and over 50% of Groupwise servers go 6+ months without reboot.
this references an older version, but might help (and it did work on my IIIxe a couple years back):

Just FYI...proper pronunciation of morse code is:
. = "dit"
- = "dah"
so....your message would be...
dit dit dah, dit dit dit, dit, dit dah dit dit, dit, dit dit dit, dit dit dit
