Ah, but it wouldn't be that hard to build. The source is there. Getting widespread adoption is another matter. That is where the outlook thing becomes a problem. Every peice of software (except for "Hello Wrld") has flaws. They are just much more pronounced when a massive number of people us the same product. One flaw, countless problems.
You do realize that the mainstream desktop market excludes about %10-30 of the destops out there? (Depending onh wether you classify mainstream as 'Microsoft', whcih you seem to be doing.)
Linux has mailreaders that equal anything Microsoft has. Look at the two words. "mail" "reader". Hmmm, let me see here, what is it supposed to do? Read mail?
I haven't used a mail reader on linux that couldn't handle attachements. So whats the difference?
Perhaps linux does have stuff designed for the lowest common denominator. What you forget is that so does windows. They build a product that appealed to the widest possible market. (read - so that even an idiot could use). The difference is that the lowest common denominator is much higer in linux due to the technical expertiese that used to be required to intall it. That left the linux world with a muck more skilled and able population that the linux crowd.
Sorry, I sould send the code (or almost anything) to almost anyone with an email account (regardless of their use of Outlook. It was the inclusion of vbs in outlook without any security mechanisms. Vbs can directly modify files on the hard drive and read the outlook addressbook. Microsoft engineers knew this (it was by design) then they decided not to put any security mechanism in, with the full knowledgee of the potential security risks associated. (And if they didn't, we/they have bigger problems.)
You're starting to get into web app server areas. Vignette and zope support htings of this nature. (Although zope has a context sensitive subclassing feature i like alot (vignette doesn't))
A long term solution (if you have lots of buttons or change them every so often) is to write somehting to create on the fly, and to them cache the button for future reference so you don't have to take the time (processor/other) every time.
Plus you receive the benefit of not haveing to remember to create the set of images each time. Just update text somewhere on the site. (Config file/otherwise)
Unfortuantely, the media will just point the finger in another direction. People will say tht we are not doing enough, and blame online communities for breeding such violent/criminal people. They will bend the definitions of words and archetypes. Mabey they could make "community" have negative connotations.
Turning up the heat is not a bad idea. The problem that needs to be overcome it the rate of change. If it's not fast enough people will accomodate. (My Machiavelli is really confuing me on this point.) (On antoher note, would reading Machiavelli at school qualify one to become a contestant in the Wave game?)
Heck, I have been screwed with via an anonymous tip line. I was accused of littering (tossing a cigarette but out of a car), and I don't even smoke!
I threatened lawsuit and the agency removed the report (or so they say).
My only guess is that I ticked someone off on the road. (At least they didn't pull a gun it guess...)
Just like everyone else is going to say. Abuse the system. (It's anonymous right? So that means that even if they wanted to catch the people abusing thesystem, they can't, right?)
Actually that probably wouldn't be all that good. It would imply that the ram was shit. For something that memory intensive getting above average quality ram would be advisable.
It also has the potential to ruin a number of lives a few orders of magnitude greater. (Think 100,000s)
It also has the potential to take you childs life.
Here's a scenario. A child, identified by the program is suspended by the administrators of the school. His parents make him/her go to counseling. The school kids outside of school taunt him/her. In his/her frustration/anger the child takes out the agression at school upon the kids/administrators with guns/bombs/whatever.
It can be the same result. Either caused by the lack of or the existence of the program. This is not the solution.
It is better that 10 guilty men go free that 1 be unjustly imprisoned.
I think Thomas jefferson might have said that. It's definitely from around the same time period.
In this case we aren't even talking about guilt. Not even thoughtcrime (1984). Only the semblance of a personality that might possibly be capable of thinking or doing something that the majority has legislated against.
And this system has the potential to brand and damage their lives as minors. This sort of program, if not abused into insignifigance (which I reccommend to those firmly against it), has alot of potential to createcriminal types.
Take someone at an impressionable age whois trying to develop their personality and tell them that they are acting like a criminal. Create a list or otherwise draw attention to them in this respect. "Non criminal"(other wise known as white collar) elements may tend to shun them. They are then forced towards the lifestyle the program (i hope) is designed to save them from.
I have know people who have gone to prison and drug rehab. One of the most prominent things I have heard is that it was lie school. They learned new/better ways of doing things. The end result? Someone who is more of a criminal, and less likely of getting caught.
Try fixing the problem by starting a snitch line for those who want to report intolerance of someone/somehting diffent.
I understood what you meant, I was just trying to describe how I understand the current situation (in the US) to be. Farmers are definitely paid to destroy or hold on to crops (essentially until they rot) by the US government (this varies according to harvest, current value, and prospective needs). Don't ask me why it isn't shipped to parts of the world that need it (some of it might be).
Farmers are in no danger of becoming unnecessary! I absolutely agree. Farmers are totally necessary. Thats why the government helps them as much as it does. The farmers in the US can produce far more food than is necessary to feed this country. When they produce more food that there is demand the price plummets, and they begin to have difficulty paying for all the equipment/service/wages they need to cover to continue to produce. If they don't produce enough, they can't cover the costs either. Basically they're between a rock and a hard place. (hopefully not on their fields)
Obviously the products that farmers market are in demand. Reduce the supply and you're very right that prices for those products will skyrocket! Lots of this money will go back to the remaining farmers.
IIRC the government still subsidizes the farmers, paying them to destroy(or not even grow) crops to keep the prices up. We (through taxes) also help pay for their electricity, roads (when they have them), telephone, farming equiptment (through subsidized loans) and soon/now their internet pron. Sounds to me like we have too many farmers. Perhaps some should consider a change of occupation.
The only law that can stop something like this is patent law, and even the USPO would throw out a fatous patent such as "Method and System for Decryption of Cyberpatrol Blocked URL Lists."
Personally I trust the banks that offer the service. They have far more regulations to deal with relating to the security of your information. Most of the large banks offer it (and even smaller banks already have it), and many more are working to add it.
Mindstorms are good as they were originally intended for children. Since then fans have created compilers, and all sorts of other things for it. The one drawback in my mind is the cost. ~$200 for a pic microcontroller and a few motors/sensors, etc... (the legos are a plus)
I personally went with a small microcontroller from Technological Arts I choose the MicroStamp11 (based off of Motorola's 68hc11 processor. The starter kit (includes everything needed to get started) costs ~$65 US. It can be programmed in assembly, sbasic, and c. I have even seena fuzzy kernel for it.
I have a few links available on my site for other stores/websites/resources/etc..., it might be helpful. (Alot of information can be found on the other sites in the Clubs section I link to (they have been around longer)). I plan on adding more resources/links over time.
RealMedia had a product caled PrivacyProxy last year, which removed the cookie issue as well as a few others (referrer, ip-address, etc...). I think it was meant for websites only though, who were delivering ads from other sites (like DoubleClick).
And AOL Trademarked "You've got mail" and "Buddy List". Even when used in the same market as AOL their trademarks didn't hold up.
Perhaps you misinterpreted what I was saying.I said I though the company was being nice about it. (i don't have fist hand experience though) "Coke" is too generic to protect, unless the name was being used in conjuction with a beverage of some sort. I don't think they are doing anything wrong, but neither would the person who currently has the domain if he asked for a relatively large sum of money for it. (Yes I have been on the corporate side of this whole thing before. Eventually we got the domain, and didn't have to sue.) P.S.- your infantile remarks show that you barely comprehend what you are talking about, and the points you do make everyone already knows, and is old hat. (And wrong in some cases)
You are correct. Trademarks only apply in the industry of the company who owns them.
Personally I would consider selling the domain for a nice price(use a lawyer for this). Up to $100,000 USD might be acceptable to them. Also make sure to include in the contract they sign with you that you are free to pursue other names with "coke" in them, and you are free from prosecution form them for using the name. Possibly have a few specific ones in mind and place them in the contract.
From what I read they haven't seemed too hostile yet, so perhaps they want to acquire the name amicably.
IANAL
BTW- coke describes a byproduct of coal used in furnaces for the production of steel.

Lets not forget activex is just as bad. (if not worse)
It was a design bug, not a coding bug.
Into which jursdiction would the lawsuit fall??
Zope Vignette
There are others(possibly asp, coldfusion, jsp, etc...), but these are the ones I know a bit about.
Plus you receive the benefit of not haveing to remember to create the set of images each time. Just update text somewhere on the site. (Config file/otherwise)
I wonder if the stuff does keyword scans (in url) or there is a list that is shared among the blocking providers.
A. Bragging Rights...
B. Attention (they got it worldwide)
C. Why not?

Good point.
Yeah, then you would have cphack as prior art.

I should know better, I have a LD player.
What is CED?
I smoke it 25. (26 on leap day)
