  1. What is real? on Free Speech, Porn And Internet Controls · · Score: 1

While they may have dismissed making Virtual child porn illegal in the past, I shudder to think what could happen if they dismiss it again.

Welcome to the 21st century, where what is "real", along with privacy, is an abstract concept that is no longer valid in todays world.

  3. Nothing to worry about really on Senator Hollings and the SSSCA · · Score: 2

First of all, Linux/FreeBSD/GPL software is so prevelant in todays society that this bill will be entirely inneffective. The amount of money spent to enforce it will seriously compromise its legitimacy.

secondly, if this bill *does* pass, technology that is affected will not only go over the border to Europe and Canada, but law enforcement officials in the USA will have to deal with it much the same way as Canadian officials deal with marijuana. No prosecution for possession. The cost to prosecute will be enormous. They will try to make examples of ppl trying to distribute it, but since most distribution will be done outside of the US, the bill will be as impotent as a 3 Mile Island employee........

    Just a few rambling thoughts.....

  4. Difference btw. Unix and Windows Worms? on Don't Forget That Worms Happen Everywhere · · Score: 2, Informative

It would be easy to say that "Open source provides faster fixes!", but that is not true. Alot of the *NIX worms were designed to exploit closed source *NIX systems (Solaris, VAX, etc).

The difference is in the technical competency of the systems administrators. A UNIX administrator is far more capable of detecting and fixing a compromise, whereas an NT administrator, for the most part, is far less literate when it comes to dealing with a security compromise.

Please note that this is a generalization, and holds true due to the fact that administering a UNIX server requires a higher level of competence than an NT server.

  6. Ignorance amongsy the Judiciary on Slashback: Efficiency,Observation,WEP · · Score: 5, Insightful

The vote stems from a conflict that has been simmering since this spring. At issue is whether it is legal and ethical for officials in Washington to check to see if any of the judiciary's 30,000 employees, among them nearly 900 active judges and hundreds of semiretired ones, use their computers for pornography, streaming video or music.

So I guess the judges are forbidden to actually see the capabilities of the internet, but merely listen to half baked descriptions and accusations from the various special interest groups?

My Grandmother had a saying "Believe none of what you hear, half of what you read, and all of what you see". This filtering bullshit will SERIOUSLY impede the judges ability to make an INFORMED decision.

  7. This is not a victory on Felten Will Present SDMI Research At USENIX · · Score: 5, Insightful

First, the RIAA used "us" (I am using that term loosely, as I am not a programmer) to crack SDMI, and will use the work done by "us" to come up with a more secure encryption scheme.

Second, they *were* successful in delaying the release of the SDMI crack long enough where it is no longer relevant.

The only "good thing"(tm) that really happened was we were able to embarrass the RIAA a bit. Mind you, they are embarrassing themselves on a constant basis, and laughing all the way to the bank.

Contrary to many a naysayer who says that 'Quake 1/2/3 is dead', people keep playing, and our q2 game servers are actually enjoying a bit of a resurgance (sp). Why? Because it is still one hell of alot of fun to play. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING can compare to the q2 physics. It had an excellent combination of good graphics, excellent multiplayer code, and physics that allowed to game to be fast paced, but not too fast paced where it seemed too unreal (no pun intended). Counterstrike, one of the most popular multiplayers games at this time, is based on the q2 engine (heavily modified by Valve), so this says something about the enduring appeal of q2, and its associated engine.

Q3 was cute, and had excellent eye candy, but I found it to be entirely unplayable. I did not enjoy the levels (even thou they were beautiful), nor did I enjoy how my character handled. It was too 'soft and squishy' for my tastes. It was obvious that ID wrote it not to sell it as a game itself, but to sell the engine to mod builders.

I can only hope that ID learns from its previous games, and can somehow capture the strong points of all their titles.

Imagine, a game that has the fear factor of Doom, the physics of Q2, and the eye candy of Q3. I can hope, can't I?
