  2. Ever spy on the courts? I was asked to. on How IT Pros Can Avoid Legal Trouble · · Score: 1

We were in creditor protection (Canadian version of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy), and the owner asked me to essentially spy on the Court appointed monitors and send him any email they sent or received when they were on site and using our computer systems. Thankfully, I had the presence of mind to know how wrong that was, and went to the Accounting controller to inform him of that request. In the end the courts were not told of his transgressions as that would have caused him a pile of trouble (he most probably would have been fired from his own company), and the accounting controller talked a bit of sense into him.

  5. Re:court intelligence on Canada's Top Court Quashes Child Porn Warrant · · Score: 2, Insightful

Surprisingly intelligent, yes, but it completely ignores the fact that a technician found evidence that he was producing child porn, only to find that he disassembled his setup and formatted his hard drive the next day. The ruling really is a mixed blessing. Ruling that cached data does not constitute possession is a good thing, but quashing the search warrant based solely on that point was a horrible thing to do due to the rest of the evidence.

  13. The rules are simple on Should You Be Paid For Being On Call? · · Score: 1

    - If you are in salary, then there is an expectation of being on call. How you work out the benefits of being on call (flex time, on call stipend) is between you and your employer.

    - If you are a contractor, you are paid by the hour and all work, regardless of whether it is in the office or at home gets billed. you can maintain some flexibility with this (ie: don't charge travel time, charge at a reduced rate for things you are learning etc).

The employer can't have its cake and eat it too. There needs to be a middle ground. If they are refusing to budge, then find employment elsewhere. Its always easier to launch into a job job when you are already working so get your resume updated and start looking.

That is irrelevent. I suspect that a vast majority of Fedora users use standard non root accounts, and only use root for doing system maintenance or installing packages. To allow a non root user to in essence do root commands without prompting for a password just begs to be exploited. the risks that this default setup exposes far outweigh any benefits that may be gained. Is it really that hard to prepend your command with sudo?
