Could you please point me to some sources of evidence on this? I've heard some of the theories about bacteria from meteorites and what-not bringing life to the planet, but i wanna know more... Enguiring Minds wanna know..
It's not just budget problems that hold NASA back... its a lack of the enthusiasm we once had for the space program. We once had a president who directly challenged the space program to reach new heights (like the MOON), and we once had a sense of competition with the USSR challenging our space ego. Since then, the last man to set foot on the moon is a senior citizen and our rate of progress has GREATLY diminished. The budget isn't to blame. If a mass, genuine interest were shown (not just by us techies, but by our elected officials, and the general public as a whole) in reaching new goals in space, the budget would be there and it would get done. Hopefully with the talk of Russia re-entering the race, something of merit will get done... something more than just crashing a robot into a nearby planet.
We're so reliant on machines today, that it's fun to try to "remeber" what it was like to have to call the airport for plane tickets, or buy a map for directions, or actually get up, walk over and change the TV channel, or oh GOD.... DO ARITHMATIC!!! Before ENIAC and UNIVAC and such, ppl actually had to count our citizens!! WOW! (maybe i'm just showing my youth here)
It's quite simple. You want a language that will help introduce the most issues purely, yet one that is actually used in the industry and not viewed as a waste of time by beginning students. Java is more pure as far as OO concepts go that C++, and is more widely used than most any other language (other that c/c++). With all the Java hype in the news, students may be more motivated to learn Java (the "new thing"). I just hope that at some point in a curriculum, students are also exposed to languages which represent different programming paradigms like Prolog, Lisp, and ML. Student's should have the chance to see that the imperative languages aren't the only and often not the easiest solution. (Wouldn't it be interesting to see students introduced to OO concepts via CLOS??)
If it's censored at all corners, then how are there free PR0N sites and why can I log on and see a movie of an actual murder. I'm not trying to be gross and perverse, but some ppl will always be putting unfiltered, uncensored stuff up on the net. Some agencies are just making it harder to find.
How do code idioms fit into all of this... if you're covering a new area of a language or design, and the solution is an idiom of the language, then who gets attribution?
An operating system is the software that interacts between the applications and the machine to help bridge the symantic gap that exists between users and the machine. Now, where we draw the line as to what is included in the OS and how far the gap is bridged by the OS and how far it is bridged by applications is open to debate. Therefore, to some Unix is an OS, and to others, it is only part of the OS.
The article is fine and dandy, but the definition of what an Operating System is has been up for debate for years... even members of the boards who came up with the POSIX standards don't and won't agree on what an OS is, so saying Unix isn't an OS is really somewhat meaningless..:)
Judging by the way our government spends money, they're probably using the time to cover up the fact that this thing probably costs about 453 times what it's worth, or what it would cost any other company (even Micro$oft) to make. Go tax dollars, GO!
Show them some of the NP-complete problem's like the traveling salesman and see if you've got any geniuses who can make you famous by solving them in linear time (or better)!
it's designed to window across networks. Looking to the future, connected pda's with the ability to do things like xdm and whatnot with other pda's and servers would be a cool toy to play with! Just a thought... i like to play:)
Usually RedHat does a.0 relese (a little buggy) then follows with the.1 (less bugs) then finally the.2 comes out with ALMOST all of the bugs fixed. After that, they're one to the next.0 again. I guess we'll just have to settle for putting XFree8 4.0 and a new kernel in ourselves:)
"Greetings Dr. Faulkin... Would you like to play a game?" (some great movie that true geeks will know!)
Well, if X is so *bad* and there's no *good* alternative to it, then why don't we just all get together and create a *good* alternative... it'd be great fun... just keep us away from the "shiny things" so we don't get distracted....
Why? Bogomips means "bogus - mips" and is only a relevant rating between computers of the same architecture. A bogomip rating comparison between an Alpha 500MHz and a PIII 500 MHz isn't as reliable as a comparison between 2 PIII's with diffenent clocks speeds. The "speed" difference isn't reliably represented. It'd still be cool to see the rating, though!
I used to complain about how slow Windoze is, then I sat down in front of one of those UltraSparc 5's with SlowLaris loaded on it. I could write a man page faster than that thing logged me in!!
I have know respect for Microsoft's compiler. How can a company make a compiler with bloated libraries that are full of memory leaks? (And people wonder why Windows sucks!)
Why does this cause such an uproar? C++ has the STL, now part of the standard C++ language according to ANSI/ISO, but how many compilers actually implement it? Last time I checked g++ was the closest with only a partial implementation. There's a big difference between saying there's a standard and actually seeing one and getting to use it!
Why even worry? We're talking about a government that couldn't even keep prohibition going, and that wasn't even a first amendment right. Our government bans some firearms and they end up being murder weapons. Our elected officials are all bark, no bite.

Bottomquark coverd the story that appeard on Scientific American's website last week... i'd like some NEWs here!

Weak... I work for a living AND I have the courage to put my name on a post like that.

Hypocrite. Talk of saving time whilst wasting it doing the same thing you were complaining about...

Like the government wont take every bit of money it can get!
