Actually, the night life in SV sucks. But San Francisco is only an hour away. SF is great: Plenty of chicks and a large percentage of the guys are gay, meaning less competition.
Doesn't matter. It is the civil suits that are important, because they hit the wallets of the people that have the power to fix the problems. That is not the cop on the beat.
The cops who beat Rodney King were acquitted, but the City of Los Angeles still had to pay out $3.8M in civil damages.
If they are offering real jobs, then how are they "fake"?
Microsoft is an international company, not beholden to only the US government, and should have no obligation to acquiesce to these demands.
TFA only gives a single example, and in that case the "victim" knew he was dealing with foreign intelligence agents, and make a deliberate choice to sell them classified info.
whenever its footage is "needed", it will be conveniently missing
Have you ever been on a jury? They tend to be made up of people from the lower echelons of society who have neither the means nor the need to weasel out of jury duty. These are the people least likely to believe the police, and given some lame excuse about "missing footage", they are going to award the abused plaintiff everything he is asking for.
On another subject: Why is this a "piloted plane"? A drone would be far less expensive, and just as capable of carrying a 5 gram camera.
Suddenly, Google Assistant on the wife's phone started. I have no idea what it heard that triggered it, but it wasn't English.
Most likely it was triggered by some random string of phonemes.
Surely Google should know we speak English exclusively? So what's the point?
I watch mostly English movies, but my wife is Chinese so we occasionally watch movies in Mandarin. So Netflix sees that we like "foreign movies" and fills our recommendation list with French, Italian, and German movies, rendering it useless.
Yes you will. Sooner or later, voice input will be the only option for many services.
You won't be able to withdraw money from an ATM without it recognizing your voice, nor will you be able to place an order with the robo-waitress at any restaurant.
If you are using the built in GPS, then the car knows the destination. If the directions say to turn at the next intersection, and the driver merges into the right lane and slows down, it is reasonable to assume the intent is to turn. They can also keep a count of how often the driver turns without signaling, and "help" those with poor habits.
Anyway, 99% of "obvious" patents posted on Slashdot are really not so obvious. You have to read the "claims" section, written in dense legalize, to understand what is actually being patented, and it is usually very different from the headline written to manufacture outrage.
I once had a co-worker who was terrified to tell our boss that she was quitting. So I told her that I would tell him. She stayed lated and cleaned out her desk, and didn't come back to work the next day. I then went into the boss's office and told him why. This was all in America, although she was an Indian immigrant.
Is Oracle pure evil? Does anyone have anything good to say about them?
I know that I hate Oracle, after some bitter experiences, and everyone I know hates them, but I figure there must be someone somewhere that once had a positive experience. Anyone?
Don't underestimate Oracle. If you make in inquiry, they will immediately start trying to identify the "decision maker", bypass you, and start calling managers and executives, and working their way up the chain until they find someone they can bribe with hookers and blackjack.
It will likely work the same here. They will bypass DoD and go straight to congress, and they may not even need new hookers if they still have videotapes of the last time.
Can you give us some examples of the MSM removing words?
Sure. Here is an actual conversation: Zimmerman:This guy looks like he's up to no good. Or he's on drugs or something. It's raining and he's just walking around, looking about. Dispatcher:OK, and this guy — is he black, white or Hispanic? Zimmerman:He looks black.
This the edited audio that NBC reported: Zimmerman:This guy looks like he's up to no good. Or he's on drugs or something. It's raining and he's just walking around, looking about. He looks black.
They were intentionally trying to make Zimmerman look like a kneejerk racist, rather than responding to the dispatcher's question.
To their credit, after weeks of waffling, NBC fired the responsible journalist for misconduct.
In 1950, Venezuela had the 4th highest per-capita income on Earth.
... and nearly all that wealth went to the top 1%.
Socialism has screwed both rich and poor in Venezuela, but the status quo ante wasn't exactly a utopia.
With growing inequality in America, and many young people looking to the left for the solution, maybe we should try to learn from what happened in Venezuela.
Venezuela is not "full communism". Most small businesses are still privately owned and run. Only the big businesses that can be easily looted have been nationalized.
Yes it is. Socialism means government ownership of the means of production (capital). That is all it means.
Socialism does not mean "capitalism with healthcare". A better word for that is "progressive" or "social democracy".
All countries are a mix of capitalism and socialism. In America, the government runs a massive advertising business that delivers garbage to everyones mailbox. In Sweden, the post office is privatized, but healthcare is not. They are about equal on the capitalism/socialism scale with government controlling about 40-50% of GDP.
Norway has somewhat more socialism because the government owns Statoil, a big oil company, but it is still a mostly capitalist country.
It is an American term, defined in American law. If you are not an American, there is no need to understand the terms. If you are an American, you certainly should. It means a job is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Managerial jobs and most salaried jobs are exempt. Non-exempt workers are mostly those paid an hourly wage.
There are some quirks. Agricultural workers are neither exempt nor non-exempt, nor do minimum wage laws apply to them. This was designed to exclude black and Hispanic farm workers so southern white Democratic congressmen would vote for the FLSA.
For some weird reason, movie theater workers are also excluded from the FLSA.
I have not found that to be true at all. Not everyone who works for hourly wages is a moron. At my company, none of them are.
At best, you get the same results as if there was a memo waiting for them
So? Sending an email is far faster and easier than writing and distributing a paper memo. That is the whole point of email. Also, there is a date-stamped permanent record of who said what.
Unlikely. Most companies require overtime work to be approved, in writing, ahead of time. So if the regulators say voluntary email outside working hours must be compensated for hourly workers, then most companies will ban email checking during commutes. The result will be wasted time, lower productivity, and ultimately lower profits and lower pay.
Research time would be better spent trying to establish why employees would want to work while commuting knowing they won't be compensated for that.
Here's my hypothesis: Wage increases and job security.
One worker checks her email during commutes, and shows up at work fully informed about any new problems and ready to jump in and help. The other shows up and spends 30 minutes catching up on email, or making dumb suggestions that have already been discussed.
Guess which one gets the raise. Guess who gets laid off when business is slow.
Since knowledge workers are generally exempt employees (outside of contractors) then they're not going to be paid overtime for their emails.
Everyone has email today, not just "knowledge workers". I can email the shipping and receiving crew in the warehouse, and the janitor who empties the trashcan in my office. These are hourly workers.
They don't get paid for their commute time, but they do get paid for their smoke breaks, so it likely evens out.
I get some of my best engineering ideas while soaking in my hot tub.
Actually, the night life in SV sucks. But San Francisco is only an hour away. SF is great: Plenty of chicks and a large percentage of the guys are gay, meaning less competition.

Gets to detect all the languages in a house for the security services.
They can already make a good guess by looking at surnames.
I'd expect Spanish and Italian to be challenging even *without* adding a third language.
Indeed. I have found that, as long as you are saying something simple, speaking Spanish in Italy works fairly well.
In the movie "The Tourist" the character played by Johnny Depp speaks Spanish to Italians thru the whole movie.
So Tesla is doing mind reading tech now?

How long did it take them to decide on the actual name for the project after they decided its acronym would be JEDI?
If Oracle gets the contract, the acronym will be changed to SITH.

full communism sure is great
Venezuela is not "full communism". Most small businesses are still privately owned and run. Only the big businesses that can be easily looted have been nationalized.
nationalization is not a requirement of socialism
Yes it is. Socialism means government ownership of the means of production (capital). That is all it means.

He has done more to undermine public faith in journalism than ANY Western leader in history.
Are you seriously implying that having faith in journalists is a good thing?
Skepticism is good. Faith is not.
