Because they can. Human nature is such that there are percentage - one hopes a minority - who abuse the power granted to them by a uniform.

The unfortunate truth is that their localised abuse of power also has a much wider reaching effect of undermining the god work that the remainder of the force does.

You could scrap the police, but the same problem would just manifest itself differently. That is a small group of humans would break the social contract as they feel it does not serve their best interests to adhere to it.

When I open my car bonnet, I see a plastic housing with four rings on it. there is a place to put oil, a place to put coolant, a place to put screen wash. The other stuff under the plastic, imho, is under plastic for a reason - to stop me messing about with it. Of course i'm sure it wouldn't be hard for me to take the plastic off...

I'm happy to do these three things, I have a little book that tells me what particular type of fluid to buy.

I would say those particular tasks are about as easy as refuelling, and likely encouraged by the manufacturer as basic DIY maintenance. I don't even need to check them, my car displays a little message telling me when stuff like that needs doing - much the same as it tells me when I am running low on fuel.

I like this, I can spend the rest of my time more effectively on other stuff that way. Furthermore it's a lease vehicle with full service, so if/when anything more serious goes wrong they take care of it. I got a flat outside my house - they sent a guy round to replace the tyre I didn't even have to get dressed! More time coding for me :)

I'm happy with this set up, if people find this setup abhorrent, then I would suggest that they source their vehicle by some other means. Whining at lease companies for taking away the privilege of changing their own tyres, or complaining that the car manufacturer is out of line for putting plastic housing over the 'don't mess with me' bits of the engine is a bit silly.

They make something and offer it for sale. You buy it or you don't.

Then you can install your homebrew software to your hearts content. Your average consumer doesn't care. In fact they probably like it the way it is. Ignorance is bliss.

I'm another 10+ year cable user. There have been times when support has been less than perfect, but they are few - mainly because the service is so reliable. With regards to those times when I have had to ring though, the above sounds familiar, however persistence, redialling and threats to leave often work

The main thing for me is they are way faster and apparently more reliable than ADSL (I pay for top package so don't get caps) but having not had adsl for last 10 years i am only basing in what i hear from friends and family. I want the fastest 'consumer' internet I can get at home and I don't mind paying a little more for it, I don;t want traffic shaping, peak time slow down or any 'well we only advertised *up-to*' shenanigans. Currently I can only get 50 meg in my area, still waiting for the 100 to be rolled out but when it is ill jump on it because to date they (virgin) have always delivered 95-100% of advertised speed so for me its worth paying for.

I had sky installed (its better than cable tv imho) but still kept virgin internet thats how much i didn't want to switch ISP. So now I am paying well over the odds as I have two different telecoms providers for tv/internet but Id rather pay and get what i want than compromise on either telly or internet...

'in common usage' != 'is still used'

Suggesting UKP and GBP are both equally common (as implied by referring to them both in the same sentence as being 'in common usage') is quite incorrect.

It's even sadder that people feel the need to make personal attacks based on wild assumptions!

My wallet is quite accustomed to holding sterling, it rarely contains anything else. My familiarity with british currency dates back to a time when one could buy sweets with half pennies, and feeling wonderfully rich at having a pound note in my little savings jar. You may have guessed at this point that I am both old and british.

These days my investments are a little more sophisticated than cash. My portfolio comprises equities that are priced in various base currencies.

My daily participation in trading derivatives and forex also offers me some insight into some of the commonly used terminology of finance.

So yes, I think I do know better than someone who erroneously believes UKP to be in 'common usage'. It isn't unless you redefine 'common usage' to include 'rarely and usually by dunces'.

Of course, I could care less...

They all had a large component of get through the main plot and unlock the world map so you can focus on grinding and reaming the hard monsters (thus rendering the final boss almost insignificant).

I quite liked 13 - felt 12 was a bigger disappointment. I hadn't even ground and on my first final boss run through pasted it immediately.
