Well, one use for this puppy would be for a portable Web terminal for browsing and email. If it's cheap enough and comes bundled with some good handwriting recognition software it may just be worth it. Granted, I wouldn't replace my PC with it but perhaps the general web browsing/email reading populous would like it.
Couple this with online services (financial, email, messaging, Pron:) and we could have a winner.
You know, as funny as it sounds this is an incredibly great idea. Think about it, how many guys really know how to cook? How many guys are bachelors (esp the./ crowd:)? I could see them gathering up a load of simple recipies and who knows...maybe publish a book under an open license? How cool would that be.
I think I'll put my killer recipe in for boiling water;)
I don't think the embedded market will be very interested in a full size motherboard. They're more attracted to the smaller single board computers.
I wonder what the real power savings are, does anyone have hard numbers? 10%? 20%? With all the power outages they had in California, it would be nice to see some "greener" computers out there before that problem plagues the rest of us. From what I remember, the high tech industry was pretty much blamed for the sudden increase in power needs.
OK, this may be incredibly off topic but I have often wondered about this. What does MS use to compile Windows? Do they use their Visual C++ compiler? Would they use the Intel compiler? Does anyone know?
I just bought Empire Earth, and already they are at version 1.0.4. It's not a big deal these days since a lot of games these days come with update tools that make downloading and installing completely painless. How well has Loki kept up with bug fix releases of their games? Do they even release them?
I have not doubt our government would pull this. Actually, I can't blame them.
Should we spark up the topic of the NSA key in windows? Remember how China almost banned MS operating systems from government use? I bet they are reconsidering that now.
If you want a job done right you have to do it yourself:) Red Flag Linux anyone?
I have to agree with this. It actually takes longer for my Adaptec 2940U2W to initialize with two hard drives than it takes Windows XP to get to the login screen.
We all have. What's worse is that news like this never ends up in the mainstream media which means the average computer user/software buyer never hears of this. Without their support/outrage, we won't be able to change much since the Slashdot crowd is a minority of the computer users out there.

But what about HTML embedded in email? For instance what you get with CNETs and Discovery channel's mailings. Those typically contain graphics, tables, etc. And what about attachments?
I went to their "download" area an saw no mention of downloading the source they are using. I imagine they must have made changes to the linux kernel to get it to run on whatever processor(s) they are using. Did anyone else see where the source code is available? Is this legal?
I don't fully agree with you. I do think that woman either are discouraged from the technical field or just generally are not interested. Either discouraged or just generally not interested? Well yeah...one of those two reasons might be why they don't like CS. I'm glad you narrowed it down for us.
The difference is that men tend not to whine about such issues as much as women do. We know that if men wanted to be elementary school teachers then they would just go and do it and not whine that our parents didn't get us started in that direction early enough in life...
Is it just me? Or does spending half a million dollars on a 100-node 600MHz cluster seem high? I could have sworn that recent posts of this kind put this type of cluster in at under $200k?

I've seen this before, why is it that everyone says "boxen"? Whos started this? Excuse me, I'm off to eat some wieners...

I have Verizon DSL in the Dallas area and I can tell you it's been incredibly reliable. Out of 4 months of service, I have had no down time at all.

what part of Computer SCIENCE don't you understand?

Hmmm, interesting reply to this post. Barring the sociological talk, aren't the differences between men and women genetic?
If you can argue the genetic case that women don't care for CS as much as men then can you not argue on other genetic cases as well?

What? Surely this must be a flame war attempt...
I enjoy linux, but saying that a quad xeon outperforms a cray is rediculous. Also, saying that linux outscales Solaris is a bit far fetched...
