The login times out, then says "Sorry, can't access the server so you are on your own and flying out of previously cached data." Then you start.
If you want to rely on this then you would need to fly the areas of interest BEFORE unplugging from civilization. It works fine. I do this all the time on business travel and zoom around destination cities while on the flight.
Also, edit your preferences to set the cache to 400MB.
The Google Earth Plus version *does* work in offline mode, displaying data from the local disk-cache. If you upgrade to Plus, set you cache size to maximum (500MB), and then create placemarks for your waypoints, you will be able to revisit the same areas when operating in offline mode.
The Google Earth forum is there on the Keyhole Community, but you need to be logged in to see it. Just create and account at bbs.keyhole.com, login, and you will be shown the "Google Earth Discussion Forum" as part of the Support area. There are hundreds of posts in interesting placemarks.
Yes, but poorly. Early poster in this thread gave link to PDF describing color-balance target. The images that were on CNN and the like were changed, but arguably not properly corrected to have neutral color balance throughout the brightness range. (I posted a link to what I feel to be an accurate version a few posts back...)
Just downloaded the NASA panorama and adjusted it using Keyhole's custom tools. The color corrected image looks much better after careful color processing. (Here is a smaller version if the original is too large for you.)
What is non-global about Google Earth?

What a charming story. Thank you for sharing it. Seeing a place is such a powerful experience.
