XFree86 has not Merged with X.Org
[23 January 2004]
There are several news items claiming that X.Org and The XFree86 Project have merged. This is a blatant lie. The XFree86 Project remains an independent organisation, and will continue as operate as an independent organisation according to its mission statement. There has been no discussion with X.Org about any such merge, let alone any agreement to a merge. XFree86 is an independent volunteer organisation, with a focus on the individual. X.Org is a vendor-sponsored organisation, formed by vendors to best suit the interests of those vendors.
Its a complicated issue as it involves international transfer of personal data.
This
document may shed a light on this issue. In effect transfer of personal data to USA is not condoned under the UK Data Protection Act 1998.
Although according to the document, the law does give powers of transfer to the ISP, this seems like a grey area unless an agreement was signed to enable the ISP to give personal information to third parties.
To quote from the document.
8.8 Legal Compulsions: It should be noted that there is no exception for legal compulsion. If a data controller in the UK is required by the law of another country to transfer personal data to that country there is no blanket exemption allowing the transfer to take place. It might of course be that the transfer is necessary for reasons of substantial public interest or is necessary in connection with legal proceedings but this will not necessarily be so. A judgement will have to be made based on the circumstances of the particular case and nature of the legal requrement.
DATA PROTECTION ACT 1998
International Transfers of Personal Data
Since its an American law I don't think the UK ISPs can give out information without a warrant from the UK courts proper.
Why not take this up with human rights organisation like liberty?
Sounds good. There ought to be something similar under BSD or GPL.
Political dissidents would definitely benefit from this kind of super search system, and so do normal users like kids doing searches for their homework.
We need our own "commie" version.
I wish I was fluent in computer languages or else I'd be the first one to start this up under BSD licence.
Any suggestions as to what language I need to learn to develop this kind of search engine?
Its gotta have a capability like freenet to distribute load on the network and the system while keeping users anonymous, since private users won't have the resource to come up with 1000s of servers.
I'm thinking on the lines of XML.
Shouldn't Israel have its own locally developed brand of Hebrew softwares?
I wouldn't be surprised at all if they were put out of business by Microsoft long ago.
Subverted by government perhaps? Its good piece of kit to learn how to make IEDs (Improvised Explosive Device). Although real bomb makers use material such as microswitches found from the scrapyard, DIY, and Radioshack. Nevertheless such creativity may make authorities nervous enough to curtail such dual use products.
Just my alternative explanation to those market force theory that dominate this discussion.
Don't judge a book by its cover alone.
Just in case no one has posted on this issue.
Here is a link to XFee86.org refuting this news.

Sounds like a very untrustworthy ISP.

Sorry if this post is doubled up. My PC decided to post automatically after I pressed a TAB key.
The official site site reveals some interesting specification.
