No, LAME is just a patch to the ISO source. Lame can be distributed cos it's just a patch. notlame can be distibuted because in Australia (where the site is hosted) patents on agorithms don't apply.
never used Latex - generally I'll use Abi writing letters and Docbook if I need to do something longer - but in terms of functionality Abi can't beat a full blown WP. If you don't need a real WP that's fine but there is noting in the same league as Word/Word Perfect in the open source world.
I'm pretty sure you can get the source for alladin ghostscript - it's just not Open Source - a bit like MySQL or QT1. So it would still be possible to steal code...
RMS once argued that you could not make GPL plugins for Netscape and Netscape is not GPL. I think it would apply the other way to - as you plugin links to a GPL (ie not LGPL) program, your plugin must also be GPL. Of course I guess plugins don't actually have to communicate by linkage - I'm not sure how litestep plugins work...
i used to run fvwm95 before i discovered ice, but it can't max properly and it's a bastard to config by hand (it's probably more configurable than ice tho...) mind you, sawmill and scwm are worse... but to each his own i guess
that is so true - apart from kwm + kde, icewm is the only WM i've come across that can do this right (rumour has it that recent sawmill + gnome can do it but i havent tried that yet). e, wm etc. suck if you are forced to run at low res...

I guess I better give up. I'm obviously never going to be able to program:)
That idea sucks. I browse at -1 because I want to decide for myself what to read. I'm fine with moderation as long as I'm not forced to accept the moderation but deleting posts is really bad.
It was mentioned that the movie was coming soon in the computer game docs (this was a long time ago, back when you could still buy C64 games). I think the old production company (Cabana Boys IIRC) went bust and the rights went back to Gibson. I saw a copy of the screenplay at a SF bookshop once but it was sealed and I was too cheap to buy it.
1 - ESR has in fact achived the opposite. Netscape's decision to release Mozilla as open source was in order to have more programmers working on it without being paid. This is what ESRs bazaar is all about.
2 - Why do the public need to know? Free Software should be for the free software community, not for those who want to take without giving back (yeah I know someone will point out I've only written a dozen lines of free code myself, but it's something).
3 - The aim of GNU is to make a COMPLETELY free system, one where proprietary apps are obsolete.
Well I personally would never run the gui on a server - a gui is for client machines. I have had X crash (it's pretty rare compared to a 95/98 crash, I haven't had a lot to do with NT tho). It will not bring down the OS the way a Windows crash will - even if it does lock your console you should still be able to telnet in and kill X - then again I've never had a problem switching VTs when X crashes so I wouldn't know. The GGI people are working on putting accelerated drivers in the Kernel and I think Matrox cards already have some acceleration on a standard 2.2 kernel.
Alan has done a lot for the free software community, but bitching about the quality of code in an open source library is stupid. what the heck do you think all that source code is for? I don't use a 486, perhaps Raster doesn't either, but I've used imlib and found it to be a very useful library. The great thing about free software is that if if doesn't work the way you like you can fix it yourself.
I think my jobs sux. I do a good enough job to stop me from getting fired, but that's about it. Linus isn't saying EVERYONE has a job they love, he's saying people do a better job when it's something they love.
And pre-release software is supposed to be buggy anyway. The decision to release 1.0 was made by Miguel who has nothing to do with Redhat and he has since admitted that it was premature.
Didn't know that. Surprising given Miller's rabid anti-censorship stance that he would let himself be re-written.
Actually it's more like the NPL or QPL - Lucent can turn any of your modifications into proprietary software.

I think OO classes could be taught in C++, however most "trade schools" teach C then C++ - encouraging you to to a lot of non-OO things...

that would make a cool sig
No - it wasn't the GST, the censorship bill was there to get Haradine to vote for the Telstra selloff. So it's only semi-non-informed.

I thought mpeg was basically an animated jpeg. What I really want is decent browser support for transparant png, that will make me ditch gif for good.

since libgif and libungif are binary compatable why don't they just dynamically link to that?

I want to express my support for the previous post. We don't need a long annoying thread starting over this.

KDE is tied to C++, KDE is not free, how is this FUD?
Um, it's not finished - it's pre-alpha, not even close to beta
