I know quite a few companies that dropped NXP out from their design-in process due to merger, which causes long term damage. They also EOLed number of special discretes, but that was unfortunately to be expected and many companies bought lifetime supplies when the deal was announced.
You do not have to sleep in business. I've found it helpful that you can get breakfast there whenever you want and can thus adjust easier than in couch.
Imagine you have deployed 100k devices on the field. Or just 1k. Then, the operator that you're using starts charging more or their service level drops. Remember, the M2M lifecycles may be long compared to the cellphones. Like 10-15 years.
What do you do ? Currently, you'd have to get new SIM cards and go to each and every device to change the devices. This is because the SIM cards are controlled by the operator who issued the card.
How much does it cost to send someone somewhere to change the SIM card ? Multiply this with 100k.
From one case, I know that sending a serviceman to 6k sites around the continent to perform a simple operation (open-flash-close) costs around 600kUSD.
If you just wanna get screwed, go to the pros. If you want to have a meaningful relationship, and prefer tech over it, you should go tech, not screwing somebody elses' life.
Still, I sometimes miss tech as it used to be for me..

The elevator rope has to be flexed around the top wheel quite a few times during its lifetime. Dyneema can't take that much repeated bending.

The electronics and piezo element in the ultrasonic sensor will fail fast in rad environement.
And then somebody must go there, install and later replace the sensors..
