  1. KDE has many looks on Gnome 2.10 Sneak Peek · · Score: 0

There isn't just one unified KDE look. Instead, as with Gnome, there are many unique themes from which to choose from. Granted, IMNHO the default Keramik theme sucks badly but the Plastik theme is the best one around.

Then you wouldn't hate Qt either. See eg. http://www.digitalfanatics.org/projects/qt_tutoria l/chapter06.html. Plus you get the fancy GUI Designer (which really works). On the negative side there's the GPL licensing (I consider the GPL too restrictive) and the size and compilation times of the Qt toolkit itself.

  3. Rip Some Chips Off and It Still Works on Abused, But Working Hardware Stories? · · Score: 0

Lately we had problems with a few Linksys 10/100 Ethernet hubs at my school. A friend of mine did some investigation on them and found out that in both hubs two chips out of five had broken and thus prevented the whole hubs from working. His solution was a bit unorthodox; He just ripped the broken chips off and covered the ports handled by those chips with duct tape. After this most of the remaining 3/5 of the ports worked just fine...

The HP 411 multi-user desktop solution seems to have only one sound device. This seriously limits its usability in e.g. language studies.

I must say that when a case mod gets to the Slashdot headlines, it's always one worth looking at. Thank you for telling us about this incredible piece of art, and congratulations to the modder for a work well done!

It's too bad the sites showing the mods tend to get the most problems from the Slashdot effect. Those big pictures seem to be the second-worst server-killer right after badly designed dynamic content.

I find the Windows way of kill/yanking really annoying. While using Windows, I keep missing the select/middle click method of kill/yanking.

  8. Haven't we met before? on Sun Says Hardware Will Be Free · · Score: 1

1337! Does this "hardware becoming free" mean, that we can build cool systems with open source while spending absolutely no money? Oh no, thanks for waking me up.

Instead we get what the folks in America, Central Europe etc. have already gotten used to in mobile telephone market: You get the phone with the cell phone service included at a low initial cost, provided that you stick with the operator for, say, three years. You aren't allowed to change operators within that period. (It's good that it doesn't go this way here in Finland. Here we buy the phones for their real price and select the operator freely.)

But what does this mean for open source? How's e.g. Sun going to keep the users from just recompiling their system, getting rid of the proprietary parts, ditching the software contract and keeping the "free" hardware? Slapping them with DMCA or nasty contracts? How are they going to accomplish this without violating the GPL?
