    Mod the parent up!

Ive just bought an Ipaq with wireless on, so i thought i would have a wander around town on my lunch hour with WiFiFoFum scanning ( Think kismet / netstumbler for pocket pc ).

As i sit back here at my desk i can see it picked up 138 unique networks, and only 27 of those are showing as having WEP / WPA. Many of them even still have SSID's of 'linksys' and 'NETGEAR' etc.

Something such as hitchhiker will even automatically try to associate and get web access through the AP with the zero user effort.

Whilst this is a step in the right direction, Id be willing to bet that Microsoft will put a hefty fee on the LUA Pricniples program, putting it out of the reach of a lot of smaller software houses.

If this is the case, then users will once again become used to just allowing any old piece of software to install with higher privileges, totally defeating the purpose of this.

How many people do you think abort the installation of unsigned drivers, even when XP warns them that they are unsigned. I'd presume it is a very high percentage.

This is a somewhat strange choice by Microsoft, in my opinion.

They cry and whinge about how inherently evil OSS is, and then when its used for a purpose that they know nothing other than OSS would be accepted, they go ahead and release software in this way.

It would be interesting to see what license this has been released under.

This could serve good use in showing they FUD around open source as the sham that it is.

Whilst im glad that they are doing this, I wonder if it may come back and haunt their OSS fighting efforts later down the line. Lets hope so, im all for Win-Win situations.

IF there are no operating system API's used by the browser, then why did MSFT fight so hard not ot have to remove it from the browser. IT might not use the OS API's, but im fairly sure it works the other way round. Has he ever tried to remove IE cleanly from a windows install?

You misunderstand the intention and working of this.

Pages linked through a 'nofollow' link will still be crawled and indexed, and still returned in search results. The main difference here is that they will not be given an elevated pagerank.

As you will probably know, pagerank works on the idea that a link to a page counts as a 'vote' for that page. You endorse the page by linking to it.

A search for a phrase that is unique to your page, will still return your page, that will not change.

The main difference here is that 1000 spammed links will not gain you any more recognition in the Google index than a single solitary link would. The content is still checked, its just not appraised higher than it should be by numerous links.

Im sorry, but i disagree. I use MS Office in the workplace (where i have no choice of office suite) and i change it to one window, all documents within. You use Firefox? You liked tabbed browsing? You are looking for multiple windows / documents within a window. If XYZ windows belongs to XYZ application, let it reside within its window, dont give me 5 taskbar items for the same tool, thats almost as bad as IE with 6 windows for different sites.

  14. Out of business? on BT Plans Move To IP Telephony, Starting Next Year · · Score: 3, Insightful

BT seem to be gearing up for something, or reacting to something. Its strange for them to have such a flurry of activity as they have had of late, normally they are quite the epitome of corporate dawdling on products and issues.

Seems that they are wanting to seriously get themselves some press time, and in my opinion are using some clever marketing to do so.

Look at the ammount of new services / announcements / products they are kicking out the door at the moment listed on El Reg.

In my opinion, this is nothing short of marketing genius. Anyone who cries out against the obvious censorship issues risks being labelled. It pushes this kind of activity under ground. so who does this really protect? the only real benefit i see from this is accidental visiting of sites, from bad links, spam or whatever. It certainly wont stop any actual people wishing to view child pornography from getting to it.

BT have made an unprecedented movement to block this content, thereby championing themselves with many different groups of society (churches, parents, police, etc etc) - but the same fanfare that has delighted these groups has warned any of the sickos that actually want to view this content that they cant use BT services to get their kicks. OK then, so they go elsewhere. No one would continue to use a service they know can not suit their needs, as underground or sick as those needs may be, they will simply move to another provider that doesnt block in this way.

Marketing genius - Champion yourselves with lots of the country, by actually bringing little to no benefit to them or anyone else.

Then sharp on the heels of this announcement, tell the people who you have just delighted that you are going to be saving them a lot of money soon by changing the infrastructure of your network etc and routing your calls using VOIP. Thinking of leaving BT? They seem to be keen to impress and promise lots, all within a week. something strange is going on, i just cant figure out what, heh.
