Just because you are upset about advertisements (and I am also) does not make it right to mooch. I totally understand blocking the obtrusive ones - but not the non-obtrusive ones.
Just because you can do it, does not make you right.
Also, pop-up blockers does not spare anybody any bandwidth...the data is still sent - just blocked at the client browser level.
You were making an argument and basing it on emulating/. If you plan on doing that, then do not give me such answer as "i think you must not know what Usenet is."
Also, many people will not go near usenet - your site will be less popular.
While all those software programs are free - the time to make the code is not free. The maintenance is not free. The bandwidth you propose on using (to emulate something like/.) is insane. So what do all of these things have in common----they cost MONEY!
The only thing I disagree with you about is that you only donate to sites you regularly use. What about the site you went to, utilized their information and then never returned. Is that fair that you are utilizing their data (they worked to put on there), you utilized their bandwidth (isn't/.ers always the ones who complain "this advertisement is using my bandwidth"). If a site is trying to generate money - then we have a responsibility to pay for the service we are using. Anyhow, I am sure someone will disagree with me -
Bandwidth (or do you think free geocities account will do it for you). Your site will be/. with a thunderous laugh...actually without paying a high end hosting company your site will be/.'d with a quite chuckle and a "that was cute."
Then there is advertising...you want your site to be known right?
Then there is maintenance. Yea you could probably whip up something similar to/. in a day or two (though I would wager a lot more time then that for something innovative and complex) - but what about maintenance. I have a feeling a lot of these people are working on/. many hours of the day. Do you plan to quit your day job for this site?
Advertising is important - my problem is with the obtrusive ones.
I would rather see innovation come in other ways. Instead of a cat and dog chase how about we figure out ways to make websites utilize less code, but offer more information. Unfortunately, we have to waste valuable resources on protecting ourselves...
That mindset plays along with the "It's okay to pirate software because I am not denying anyone of the software, i am just copying it." Someone put effort into this website. Someone is paying for the hosting, bandwidth, etc. If people do not subscribe or view the ads then they are getting the material totally for free. If the people who make this site are losing money (and they are not wealthy enough to keep it going) the site will be lost.
Blocking ad's will only lead to innovation in terms of people trying to circumvent the pop-ups, and other people trying to figure ways to prevent that. In the end - it is a cat and dog chase and it is a waste of our resources. I would rather see us live in harmony (as far as internet/advertising goes) and working on creating better services.
we didn't have people maliciously putting in code. Code that causes viruses/worms, code that opens multiple/non-ending pop-ups, code that didn't direct someone to porn sites when the person entered www.kidsbooks.com (example).
Since advertisments have become obtrusive. Since advertisements contain malware. Since advertisments redirect you to other sites you didn't intend or even conceive of to go to... I say
Tough shit to double-click who is one of the biggest offenders
There will still be sites who offer free services, and will have non-obstrusive advertisments. There will be sites who are supported by the products/services they sell. The Internet will not go down because of pop-up blockers...with luck Double-click will.
"Ladies and gentleman, do not worry, the data collcted from you will be made public - but we are sure marketers will not call or mail you any products you do not choose."
Oh did I mention, yesterday I got four letters to consolidate my student loands and two letters to get a parent plus loan. I don't have kids, and i consolidated my student loans about five years ago (and you cannot reconsolidate).
They go within the quote if you are quoting the punctuation mark. I.e.:
From the new Batman movie we see that Robin is still an idiot when he says "Holy capers Batman I am so excited!"
The quote is needed to show excitment in the statement.
Words are just words. They don't hurt like a stick or a stone. People should feel that they can say anything they want to, at any time.
You have apparantly never been slandered. Words can cause much harm such as: Ruin a perons career "that doctor molests children", "i have evidence that politician sells cocaine", etc. Or some things like "Yes Mrs. Robinson, I slept with Mr. Robinson when you were away last week."
Or how about this situation...your girlfriend (just humor me here) who you are totally in love with - comes to you and starts saying mean and hurtful things (use your imagination)... Imagine a parent verbally abusing a child.
Words can easily be more painful then a beating from a bat. Words can drive people to kill (themselves or others). Words can drive people to war.
Slashdot has a tech-savvy audience that, to be kind, is mischievous and to be not so kind, is malicious
Ok so he is saying:
1) 'To be kind' we are tech-savvy. insulting our technical skills
2) "is mischievous"..."malicious"
Thank you for degregading my technical skills. I just lost a client who saw that and knows I am a/. user. Now they think I am worthless. Oh and I just received a subpeona because since I am a/. user I am malicious and probably caused some detriment to some company. My lawyer will p0wn your lawyer.
You know a "LOT" of other folks? I don't...in fact I don't know any - it doesn't matter.
While you may scoff at this - most people I know like windows media player. It does what they want (rip/play movies/music, play radio) and it is already installed. Most people do not want to deal with the inconenience of trying to install extra software.
Why would someone want iTunes over Contois? iTunes is free - but that isn't the reason. iTunes works with iPods (gasp). I think the only other program to offer this is WinAmp. So how many people use iTunes without an iPod? Probably not many...especially since there is a far greater number of superior music products available.
You do realize why they do this right? It really isn't for shits and giggles. There is a serious problem of people hacking and giving/selling away copies of music, movies, programs, etc that do not belong to them - and thusly they do not have a right to do this. None of these organizations would give two craps in a bucket if all EVERYONE did was make legitimate backups or want to laod it on their computers, mp3 players, etc.
Unfortunately we have a lot (not just a few) bad apples in the basket who give/sell away copies that costs these industries millions (if not billions) every year. They are protecting their property in the best way they can. They are not pissing off their legit customers - thats stupid and they are not that stupid....
Its like you going to the airport and having to go through checkpoints and show your ID...and having to get your baggage scanned, and maybe yourself patted down. Are the airlines doing this to alienate you? No, they are doing this because there are a bunch of assholes out there trying to blow up planes.
SO you and others (including myself) may not like the results - but you and others CANNOT deny their reason for these causes are justified. Maybe their methods are not the best, but so far i do not see anyone proposing anything better.
"Thats right ladies and gentleman...you too can own your very own non-drm'd cd. And for the low low cost of $35.95, it's a steal. Now please, lets be fair to the RIAA and not make illegal copies."
"Yes Mr. Chewbacon, we would be glad to provide you with a work-around. We just need the following: Your name, Social Security #, Drivers License #, five credit card numbers, your address, DOB, Passport #, lawyers number, school you graduated from, fingerprint, signed affidavit, your soul, and your e-mail address."
"Please install the patch as soon as possible. Also, please disable any anti-virus programs prior to installing the patch.
Because if they do not at least make an attempt to protect it people like those found on/. will say "they should use technology to protect their material, not the law." - Though they already say this...meh - for every lock, there is a person who can break it - the law is there to punish those who get caught.:)
My co-worker is a staunch defender of crack berry (she hates it when i say that) - but she admits she has a hard time hearing people when on the phone (while she is using the crack berry). I personally think their service is highway robbery. Let us see what you have to pay for:
Crack berry (expensive, but average cost for such device)
Corporate black berry software (expensive add-on that is a rip imho)
Corporate black berry license for each black berry user who wants to access their email (TOTAL 100% rip-off).
In the end, I think this device is a major cost (anywhere from 500-1000 per device with the licenses).
My other co-worker has Treo and he likes it, but i know some features he cannot use - does the blackberry do anything the treo cannot (anything of note that is)
While I agree with your end assessment of the loyalty to crack berry (i.e. crackberry service STILL worked during 9/11 when cell phone lines were down due to high system usage), what organization has 300+ crackberry users that does not see such a transition cost as negligent? Though I would assume if blackberry had to refund all of their clients they would go bankrupt in a major way...
While I won't agree/disagree with the patent case (if they have the right to sue then fine, if they don't well damn)...it should note that depending on the request of the injunction (and the judge's approval) they could force a shutdown of existing services. What this means for the users:
You can return your crackberry and get a full refund (including enterprise server licenses cost) or you can keep your crackberry and it just looks pretty, not doing anything that requires the service.
Go ahead, disobey a law targeted at criminals..namely terrorists. When your sitting in a federal jail, I hope you won't be upset when some big guy named Apu "In your pupu" Musharief uses you as the poster boy for his Jyhad.
I already said it wouldn't be popular. That's the whole point.
Then there is ZERO point to your example or your "point"
