If Avast can produce an AV product that doesn't need to access the kernel then why can't the others?
Sould they be allowed to access the kernel because they want to use rootkit like stealth technology? Technology that has the potential to make my system more unstable?
IS THAT FAIR TO ME!!!
Forget what is fair to the AV companies...I want what is ultimately best and fair for me.
Where is your proof or documentation that MS is using off limits code?
AV products only protect against known virus threats whereas patchguard may offer some measure of protection against known and unknown rootkit like threats.
What are they delivering with this new OS??? Are they delivering they type of technology that warrants a new OS version or are they preying on loyal MAC deciples? Sounds like a way to make more money to me...
Too bad MS owns all the most stupid Internet users, you know...the users who click on anything and everything and invite a problem child into their house. the Internet is like the wild wild west, proceed at your own risk...
Nobody outside of the fringe Apple fanatics care about OSX. Microsoft will sell more windows licenses this year than there are Apples in the world!!! Everyone will buy Windows Vista, and it will be the point where Microsoft turns the corner on security. Stay tuned...your MAC is about to become obsolete!!!
By the way, do you like Apples OS upgrade program? They keep you sending them money for an OS upgrade every 18 months for what amounts to a service pack in the windows world.
Keep your head in the sand and say;
I'm superior because I own a MAC...
I'm superior because I own a MAC...
I'm superior because I own a MAC...
I'm superior because I own a MAC...
I'm superior because I own a MAC......
I have a media center PC that records my shows and automatically transcodes it to my creative ZEN 30GB Video player. It all works seamlessly without having to PURCHASE a video from ITunes!!!!!
Who has more freedom here???? I DO!!! I record what I want, when I want, and watch it where I want!!!
Because Apple is the most proprietary of the bunch. Think of all the times Apple released a new version of ITunes to shut off some cool 3rd party app. Don't get me wrong the ipod hardware is super/best of breed but Apple keeps a tight leash on what you can do with it...besides what has Apple given back to OSS?
I'm sure this wasn't just given to Microsoft. The governing body who gave it to them must have done their research before awarding this to Microsoft. Not to mention the other vendors would have raised hell if it was improperly awarded.
I think MS missed the publication deadline so they were excluded from the list. But that doesn't change the fact that they landed at 131 on their first try. I think they'll break 100 as their technology matures and is used in bigger clusters.
It's being driven by content providors such as FOX, MGM, SONY, RIAA to name a few.
Linux and OSX will have to follow suit and provide this silly method of content protection if playback is to be expected, otherwise you'll be locked out.
"However, we did have two Win32 honeypots in Brazil online for several months before being compromised by worms."
and it you read the techweb article you would have read
"Windows XP SP1 with the for-free ZoneAlarm firewall, however, as well as Windows XP SP2, fared much better. Although both configurations were probed by attackers, neither was compromised during the two weeks."
Why would I post an IP address? So I can have my network disrupted with a flood of attempts? Nice try but I don't think so.
Don't you be so naive... You want a perfect system of justice and punishment. Well I got news for you...it's not going to happen. Not when one group (the guards) can exert so much control over another(the inmates).
The best anyone can ask for is for an "adequate" system of checks and balances which includes the family and media so the police don't end up policing themselves.
It's far from perfect but I'll bet it's a heck of a lot more than what people in other countries may have.
If you're so down on the justice system then why don't you do something to improve it instead of sitting on your butt arguing with me? Are you involved with any advocacy or watchdog groups?
If you feel that strongly do something instead of complaining...
Plese tell me what makes you an expert on the US prison system!!!
We are not talking about prison systems world wide, we are talking about the Portland Oregon prison system. Again I ask you, What makes you an expert on the Oregon Prison system? Did you research the subject? If so post your results so I can understand... You make these statements of rape and abuse and offer nothing to back them up. Is the US prison system perfect? NO, But it's seems to be the safest/cleanest place to be jailed when compared to other countries.
He has a family doesn't he? Don't you think they will make sure he is treated correctly? If I were them I would, and if I saw abuse I would notify the authorities and then go to the media if it was not corrected.
Yes I do break the law, I drive too fast. The reason I drive fast is because the penalty is a small fine and a slap on the wrist. If the penalty was an overnight stay in jail I would not speed anymore...
While I don't agree with your opinion I do respect it, really.
The fact is; Breaking into something whether it's a house or a computer system is a CRIME!!! He was convicted of that crime. That makes him a CRIMINAL... He committed this crime to store illegally reproduced copyrighted material! Another CRIME!!!
I don't buy your assertion he will be raped, do you think everyone who goes to prison is raped? What do you base this statement on? If he is that much of a babe in the woods he'll get protective custody and spend time with other first time offenders and not the hardened criminals you speak of.
People must be held accountable for their actions as a detterent to the next person contemplating the same behavior. Seeing this they just might say "it's not worth it if I get caught".
No, I made plenty of mistakes but I was taught to respect other people and their property, consequently I only caused problems for myself because I was held accountable for my actions, and I learned from it.
Suppose his actions caused financial harm to You? Would you be so willing to let him off easy?
Not holding people accountable for their actions sends the wrong message. I hope his sentence deters other from trying the same thing.
I'll tell you why it will change, because end users are lazy with regards to patching and as Linux attacts more of these end users you will start to feel our pain.
Secondly have you looked at how many security vulnerabilities have been found in Apache 2.x? IIS 6 has NONE (as in not one securty bulletin) in the two years it has been in production.
Also Netcrafts methodology is flawed and counts domains not servers...this skews the results in favor of Apache.
If you're that smart why didn't you revert to a system restore point? Or better yet have the free version of AD-Aware installed prior to your problems? Did you have a backup?
The fact you are a RHCE means you are dangerous when it comes to windows system administration!
Telling people it's time to switch to Linux is a joke right? People run APPLICATIONS and don't care about the OS. They will run whatever OS runs the applications they want to use. So don't count on Joe user to switch unitl Linux has the applications people want to use.
The letters PhD does not give them the right to put other networked systems or the confidential data they are entrusted with at risk.
Remember what happened at UC-Berkeley? Over 600,000 residents with their personal information compromised because a researcher did not follow procedure and patch their software (I think it was Oracle and a patch was available).
Many times academic/research systems paid for by grant money are not known to central IT until the system is compromised, a situation that could have been completely avoided if the researcher had asked for their systems to be checked by IT personnel. Unfortunately a PhD does not like to be told what they can and can't do...until their system is compromised and blocked from network access.
While many professors are very well educated with respect to the application software they use to get their work done, they seem to have very little if any knowledge of basic system security. Having said that I will now say not all PhDs are like that and it is a pleasure to work with them because they understand.
It's too bad that in most cases a PhD + computer = compromised system
Microsoft will now be able to write even better tools to move people from Netware/Suse/Linux to Microsoft products...

We are spamming ourselves...
At least I know how to spell allowed! Something which seems to have eluded you!
No...if you read the PDF you would have read

Why doesn't someone put a fully patched windows box on the internet. Because it would last as long as a Linux box, that's why.
I hope it works better than the old netscape suite of products. Man was that a nightmare...

How about Quicken? I want the REAL THING not a Linux alternative which by the way does not measure up!!!
