depends what you mean by more flexible. One of the reasons my company uses Perl for web apps is because the apps have a front-end (web) and a back-end (shell) component.
In Perl we can have the shell and the web applications both sharing the same code, which is a perfect example of Perl's flexibility.

It would be possible to do the same thing with java and probably PHP as well by running a standalone version or something, but Perl is perfectly suited to the task.

i don't know, there really is a difference: you volunteer that information to the search engine and that info is logged, used to target ads to you and passed onto third parties via their web analytics provider. essentially every major commercial website does one or all of these things.

gmail would be parsing private emails that are sent to your email address and targeting ads to you based on the keywords it selects.

why try and make the results pages look exactly like google's with the green URLs printed under site listing and general formatting of results?

they should make themselves stand out as something new and different, rather then try to imitate google.

slashdot is hardly storing "all your web browsing" - just your activity on their site, which is how every database-driven website works.

if you want amazon to store all your web browsing and search history then that's fine, but there's certainly a difference.

personally, i don't want them targeting products to me based on my browsing/searching habits because i just don't agree with that sort of marketing technique.

the reuters article text indicates that the site contains racially offensive images. my assumption that the victim was black was NOT based on the fact that he lived in a housing project i assure you. it was based on the fact that the site contained racist material AND gave the video that title - i linked the two in other words. also, i think at the time of posting i must have already read other posts that indicated the victim was black, otherwise i don't think i would have made that assumption.
