Linux users will have less pirated software on their boxen, (probably) not because they have strong feelings about copyright, but because most software one would want to pirate only runs on windows. Therefore, pirating software makes no sense. (If you wish one could compare it to hoarding diesel when driving a petrol car).
Yes, I know that you can get various Windows programs to run under Wine/WineX and that some people choose that path. For myself, the last time I used wine was to get mIRC/WinAmp to run (just as an experiment of course:) about 5 years ago.
I fully sympathise.
The problem of the modern day and age is that politicians are considered "leaders" of the people. Where and when did this happen? Are not politicians chosen by the people to represent them and their interests?
When did it come to be that the people became used to the idea that politicians were somehow more privileged, more important, wiser or more worthy than themselves?
I feel the "system" has moulded after its own design into beings who can't think outside this "system". We, the people, have simply given up on our rights and duties, happily trading them all for the comfort of.... what?
Somehow we have the concept of "civil disobedience". Disobedience against what? How can the public be disobedient in their own country? Who makes these laws that the public disobeys? Have we somehow installed a new ruling class of lawyers and politicians replacing the kings of old?
Just as the the parent poster I despair at the state of things. I'd like to advocate a revolution but I wouldn't know where or how to begin. I suppose I'm just too complacent about these issues and more than happy to give up my rights for some intangible benefit I'm sure I'm getting....
That's me done rambling and ranting and spewing incoherent thoughts at innocent bystanders. Thanks for reading. Move on now. There's nothing to see here..
Would you believe that some of the "original" black/death (or something dark anyways) metal came from Norway? It's considered among these musicians to be almost like Graceland (but a lot darker I presume). Just my 0.02NOK:)
Great as that would be, there are certain areas of the Bodleian where these robots could run into trouble. In at least one section of the library the books are chained to the shelves, and get this, organized by height... I suppose it made sense a hundred or so years ago:)
Ok, I'll bite:) (In case my attempt at humor was lost on you?).
When open source software becomes more readily accessible on the Windows platform it is a natural progression that the "killer app" no longer is MS office but (for the sake of this argument) OpenOffice.org (It's free. People like Free). As most people in business and at home do use (an) office application the barrier of "But Linux does not run office!" disappears. Apply this tactic to any other open source app (the Gimp/whatever) and suddenly people find themselves using software also available on "that other OS".
When this happens users _may_ find themselves thinking that maybe "that other OS" might not be such a bad idea after all.
Thus : Open Source on Windows == Linux:)
Admit it. My reasoning is flawless... which may be it's flaw... (my head hurts now...)
I have to say that in principle I agree with you on this one. If you've got nothing to hide then why worry?
But consider this: It's one less right/liberty/whatever for the little guy. If you are willing to give up this right of privacy/liberty/you-name-it then what comes next?
Slowly nibbling away at the rules and regulations that protect the populace from govenmental abuse.
What's that saying? The straw that broke the donkey's back?
I suppose this is just an indication of things to come. From my strongly euro-centric point of view the United States of America is about to become either a dictatorship or a police state... that is unless the American people wake up and smell the corruption and blatant abuse of power by their elected(?) leaders. Best of luck to you. You're going to need it.
And no, at the moment the European Union is just as bad, if not worse. We're doomed:)
Well... We could always petition Microsoft to include Firefox/Mozilla in their Windows Update(TM) scheme:)
After that we'll move on to include the Gimp and OpenOffice. Before you can say "global domination" we'll have a perfectly good Microsoft Linux distro and whammo... 99% of the desktop belongs to the penguin.
I'm going to patent "A method, or means, for achieving a goal, or a result, tangible or intangible, with or without the use, or aid, of something, or someone else"...
Personally I am of two minds regarding your statement about cowardice. I served my country (Norway) with pride, and went on a NATO peacekeeping mission on Kosovo for 13 months. Sad as it may sound, that was the best time of my life. I met some of the finest men and women and I am privileged to call them friends.
Having said that, the one thing that made those years slightly miserable was the few people in the service who _really_ did not want to be there... Constantly moaning and complaining, not pulling their weight and so on. That does not mean that they were bad people, far from it, merely that they did not fit in with the other men and women who wanted to to their duty.
Serving your country is a Good Thing(TM). Should a person decide that military service is not their thing they should not be forced to do it, as they will serve the nation's soldiers better by staying away. The end result is a win/win situation. The "cowards" (if you should want to label them as such) are let off the hook, and the "patriots" (again a matter of preference) will do what they consider their duty, unhindered by unwilling brothers in arms.
I have no idea what you are on about so I'm going to assume you replied to the wrong parent :)
Have a nice day.
Something for your consideration:

I believe you are right. I stand corrected!
