Why not use some of that heat for a more productive applications? For example, collecting it and beaming it down to Earth in the form of microwaves, or having Sterling engines both in orbit and on the ground? Heat can be incredibly useful -- why simply re-radiate it into outer space?
>>Remember: The bill of rights assigns rights to the people.
Not to be pedantic, but a little correction is in order. Rights cannot be assigned. They are inalienable and unabridgeable. A person *possesses* rights upon entering this world, simply because he or she exists. No other entity in the Universe can ever take away one's rights. One can only either be repress a right's expression or use, or acknowledge a right and its use/expression. Privileges, on the other hand, can be granted or rescinded at will by an authority. This is why felons should be able to vote. Voting is a right, not a privilege, and therefore a government is in violation of the Constitution (and more fundamentally, Natural Law), when it suppresses one's right to such. As heinous as one's action's may be, they do not alter the fact that the perpetrator is a sentient being with God-given rights.

Precisely. The Dems are licking their chops hoping they can get one of their own in the White House who'll be able to exploit these expanded powers. A Democrat dictator is no better than a Republican one. Dictators are dictators. Pigs is pigs is pigs.
Really, are you surprised that Comcrap are lying to you? When Verizon deploys FIOS to my subdivision, I'll be the first to ditch those motherfuckers and go with Verizon. For all the evil things said about Verizon over the years, I'd choose them over Comcrap any day of the week and twice on Sundays. At least Verizon is nice enough to use some K.Y. -- Comcrap just rams you up the arse with a rusty bludgeon and gives you tetanus, then charges you for the privilege.

AMEN, brother. Many people think wealth == money. Not true. Money is simply a claim to the acquisition of wealth. Wealth is *stuff*. Most people do not understand this. And having a service performed for you does not give you more wealth, because that service is consumed instantaneously whilst being rendered. Service is simply the manipulation, use, and transfer of wealth (again, i.e., STUFF). Keynes and his lackeys had it all wrong. The symbol economy is not the real economy.
Squeak, which I believe is a Scheme derivative, is geared towards children or at least people with minimal coding facility. I would also incorporate this with HTML. Being able to grok HTML is very handy even if all you're gonna do is put a blog up on MySpace....
Now before anyone mods me as a troll or flamebait, hear me out. I hope that, with Billy Boy out of the daily picture, people like Ray Ozzie will realise what a steaming pile of donkey shit IE is and cut its losses. Opera is the only widely-used browser to pass the ACID2 tests fully (not even Firefox can perform tha feat), and it keeps adding nifty features IE can only dream of. Some of you may say this whole thing reduces competition, but remember, there's still Firefox, and dozens of other browsers.
My bad. I went and did some research and you're absolutely correct. An archived story on here erroneously stated that thorium was present in spent fuel. But the article referenced was in some hokey magazine, not a peer-reviewed journal.
Investment banks like Lehman Brothers and Goldman Sachs snap up maths majors like a fat kid snaps up Cheezy Poofs. Securities are becoming increasingly esoteric, and they are based on -- you guessed it -- advanced mathematics. As a guy working in Wall Street, you would be developing fancy new securities instruments and making shitloads of money for your labour.

Yeah, I mean we have disparaged the Soviets and Nazis (KGB and SS, respectively) for spying on their fellow citizens in the past. We don't want the secret to get out that our politicians are nothing but hypocrites who preach one thing to the rest of the world, and then callously do the opposite.
...that we need not only technical solutions, but solutions that target social engineering. Most 'hackers' are not technical wizards -- they simply know how to play a good game of poker and read people. The general population needs to be inculcated and trained on this concept:
* Legitimate businesses will not email you asking for your username and password - they have trivial means to get your account information since they HOST it!
This to me is common sense, but I guess most people find it rather an epiphany.
To be pedantic, bacteria themselves have no discernible odour. It's their metabolic byproducts (e.g., hydrogen sulfide, butyric acid) that possess foul odours.
...for the telcos. He gets paid big bucks to spin things in their favour. The big thing I have issue with is when he says that either the content providers pay for infrastructure improvements, or the consumers will be forced to. Well, DUH! Either way, the consumers will still be forced to, by virtue of the fact that any costs they don't pay directly will simply be passed onto them in the form of higher prices. If you pay to drive in the HOV lane of the motorway, who's to say Verizon or Comcast will honour it? They may fetter access anyway...
Fuck banks. Join a credit union. Here in Virginia, simply taking a course at a community college makes one eligible for membership to the Virginia Credit Union, for example. The nice thing is that, by virtue of having deposits in a CU, you own shares in it. Therefore, they tend to treat you much nicer (since you're not just a customer, but an equity owner). Plus, because CU's are non-profit, their fees are usually much lower, and they offer much more attractive rates on loans and securities. The only downside of a credit union is a limited amount of total deposits -- which shouldn't affect you unless you're a mid- to large-sized corporation. Those are the only entities that legitimately need access to the huge amounts of capital that banks offer -- the rest of us are far better served by credit unions.
...and tells me to go sleep on the sofa, is that considered couch-surfing?

Wow, a phone that is simply a *phone* and not an MP3 player/PDA/dildo/surrogate lover/toothbrush/kitchen sink/Swiss army knife. Whoda thunk it?

Amen! If I could, I would mod your post as a +10. Thank God there are some people on here who have a fucking clue.
If you want preprints of papers, go to the NLANL archives at www.arxiv.org....

Why not recycle nuclear waste in breeder reactors? Nuclear waste is rich in thorium, which is a great fuel. Waste not, want not....

In a perfect world, government would be unnecessary....in other words, government is a necessary evil BECAUSE our world is imperfect.
Exactly. Does it matter if 535 morons (give or take) debate national issues as opposed to 290 million? Law of Large Numbers, people...DUH!

Why not just slap *ix on there and use Postfix or qmail? There are lots of good MTA's out there besides Sendmail...
I know of a single-occupancy vehicle design that gets an infinite number of miles to the gallon of petrol -- it's called a bicycle.
