Obviously installing gentoo isn't going to make you a linux guru over night, but if you pay attention to everything that is going on you do end up learning a lot more about what is actually on your system than if you do a graphical live cd install with some other distro.
Its been awhile, my gentoo system has been running pretty smoothly for about 2 years so i haven't needed to do a fresh install, but if i remember correctly the documention did a pretty good job of explaining every command that it had you type in during the install. If you're new to linux, you end up with a sense of accomplishment after a successful install and you're familiar with the basic tools that'll get you started on your path to enlightenment.
One of the cool things about ubuntu is that its actually really easy to set up as a 2nd OS if you already have windows installed. Ubuntu's installer can resize the windows partition and make your swap, root, and boot partitions with a few clickes of the mouse when installing from a live cd.
Good luck using the XP cd to get windows to install as a second OS with a pre-existing linux setup...
You can remap your windows key to do all sorts of fun stuff linux...
I can move windows, resize windows, run a few common apps, show my desktop, change my background, close or shade an app, minimize everything, and display my root menu which can be easily navigated with the keyboard.
i use fluxbox as my wm, heres the relevant section my ~/.fluxbox/keys file
After a year or two of serious use my laptop batteries last about 1/2 as long as they originally did... And those things are pretty damn expensive to replace.. i would guess that a large percentage of the price is going to pay for all the batteries. What happens when they don't hold their charge anymore?
i rearranged all the keys on my keyboard.. just use a screw driver or a dull knife to pop each one out and put it where ever you want. It has definately improved my typing ability and freaks out my friends when they try to use my computer:)
I got my first fraud email from some site claiming to be paypal the other day, and followed the link to see how convincing it was... The site looked pretty good (unless you check out the address bar... )
So i figured i'd try and login with some random user name and password... Well it seemed like they actually forward the information to paypal's site to check and see if its valid...
Maybe they just deny everyone who tries to login, but it looked like my browser was actually sending some information to paypal.com befroe the russian site told me that my info was invald... i didn't really want to try it with my real info, so i'm not really sure how it would behave if it recieved a good username/pass,,
So depending on how much effort they put into building the fake site, flooding it with bad date might be sort of useless
Why does a web browser need to be able to read pdf files??
I never bothered installing the adobe software, and have firefox set up to open all pdf files in xpdf automatically... it works great!
The document is opened a second or two after i click the link, and i never have to worry about my browser crashing..
dude... that cow doesn't look 18..... kobe should start asking for ID

honestly... i don't see why so many people bitch about spam... just don't give out your primary email address to people you don't know.... and no spame comes your way...
open a yahoo acount... get yahooPOPS.... and if you ever need to give out your email to some website give them the yahoo one...
in my university account i get maybe one spame mail a week, which is usually caught by their filter....
if you enter your email address in anything you don't trust its blllllahh@hotmail.com... if you need to recieve something from the site its whatever@yahoo.com... if its someone you know give them your real address...=NO SPAM... its not that difficult....
