  1. You make incorrect assumptions on AMD Athlon 64 6000+ Launched And Tested · · Score: 4, Interesting

The design and development of a processor has improved vastly since the days of borked multipliers. There are standard benchmark tests that engineers use to rate their designs in-house. If AMD chooses to go with smaller caches, I would imagine they have very good reasons.

Perhaps in order to keep good performance when communicating between caches they need to keep the number of memory addresses low so that the overhead stays low. They decided that separate caches was a better model, and they currently have to maximize performance with this design.

AMD might have favored their server market when choosing this design and separate cache works better for server machines. They may need to refine their architecture for the desktop market. Don't be so quick to accuse AMD of making cache mistakes without doing the math for find the theoretical best solution.

I would predict that now that it has been determined to be possible it will be a while before big companies pick up this technology and begin testing with it. TFA didn't mention the cost of manufacturing products using this technology, or the reliability and durability of the technology. at such a small scale if a molecule was shifted even a very small amount, it could render the device unusable. Also, I don't know of any methods of mass producing these types of nano-technology. It could be quite a while (10 years or more) before we see any application of this technology in consumer devices.

The funny thing is that whoever made that video accessed a totally different file of the movie. They actually pulled up a trailer that was ripped from TV. That is not the actual film, they have no evidence in this video clip that the release on that site contains the file. I still feel very skeptical about all of this.

  6. Who needs this service? on New Phone Service Promises to ID Songs · · Score: 1

Sure, there have been times when I've wanted to know the name of the song I was listening to. Usually I just jot down some of the lyrics and if I really cared I google for the song later. For free. and in the rare case that the song isn't online (indie band) then I highly doubt 411SONG will know it either.

I can only see this as a bad thing. How many people will end up in car accidents because they pull out their phone while driving and reach to hold the phone to the speaker, then look at the phone and read what it is. Its likely that most people won't care that much and will hear it again on the radio. I doubt this service will be able to ID songs that aren't in the top of their respective charts.

Unless the advertise this on MTV or another popular TV station, I can't see this service really taking off. I have a feeling most people would rather buy the song off iTunes than find out who performs it for the same price.

you completely misunderstood my point. Or perhaps I didn't explain clearly enough. I didn't suggest that we re-introduce all the characters, or that each movie stand on its own, but that we look at the pros and cons of this film without letting the pros/cons from the other movies interfere with it.

Think of 6 lights clustered together. When together, they make a bright light, but how much is each individual light contributing to the collective brightness? I would call episodes I, II, and III the dimmest bulbs of the bunch by far, and far dimmer than most movies made today (and even those can be pretty horrible). If it weren't for the previous movies, crap like this would never see the light of day.

A better question is how does this film stand on its own? lets imagine a world without any other star wars. no one is in love with the characters, the universe, or the story. hell, they are just as fickle and pissy as usual.

Can you envision that? Good. Now would you have even looked twice at this movie? would anyone have gone to see it? Be honest now. I know that I wouldn't be impressed.

This reminds me of a film I saw several years ago. It was a very interesting concept, and the effects were very well done, but it seemed like they took a long novel and tried to condense it into a 2 hour film, and failed. It could have been great, but there was nothing there to make me care about this "could have been" film. I see the same thing when I look at this film all by itself.

Sure the effects are great. Will they be surpassed again in a few years? Probably. Will there be any reason to remember this film then? Probably not, if it wasn't for the 5 other films that accompany it.

On its own merits, i say this film is very poorly done, and I wish that people could see it that way.

No, it is the start of Microsoft Newspeak. Longhorn will no longer say "Memory Page Fault" but instead "memfault." "Blue Screen" (bluescree) will lose its negative meaning and come to be a blessing from m.s. (Microsoft). Words like honeymonkey will eventually take on meanings like Ingsoc or doublethink, and there will be no more crashes, because it is no longer possible to concieve a crash.

After viewing the trailer and hearing some of the dialog and seeing the effects, im a bit skeptical that this could be more entertaining than the real thing.

to be honest, the actors sound like they're in a porno, except that instead of seeing naked people, we see lots of CG effects and homegrown lightsaber effects. I'm impressed at the quality they were able to achieve, yet the storyline and acting may prove to be even worse than episodes 1 and 2.

i'm afraid that they will stray down the same path that the first 2 did and be full of neat effects (which seem cooler because they weren't made by ILM) but have no strong points.

cross platform technology based on a standard agreed on by most of the big names in web technology. this kind of thing gets me excited.

I don't think that they will re-create the Acive-X woes of IE, as most users of mozilla migrated from IE because of the hazards inherent in Acive-X. I highly doubt that they plan to alienate their own community.

I am excited about the great potential this has to transform the web. By making all browsers (and even though I hate IE, I would like to see Microsoft accept the standard for the sake of countless Windows users) equal, communication will improve.

Through this, we may see Word Processors run through web browsers, and have them be compatible on all platforms. The possibilities seem endless, and as broadband and connectivity spreads, this may prove to be an important juncture in the history of the web.

  16. Looking Back At Trusts on Should The FCC Be Abolished? · · Score: 1

We want less government intervention and more control by businesses. ok. If we look at history (a little further back than the birth of the FCC) we will see the birth of Sherman Antitrust Act, which was passed because businesses controlled the economy and government too much.

We assume that the companies (big and small) have the end-user's interests forefront in their minds. I feel that they only desire to make the greatest profit possible, and that the antitrust laws could become useless if the corporations control the government (they were once usless, along with the interstate commerce act of 1887 which had no power unless there was someone to enforce it).

As much as I value free speech, I can't think that the hands of corporations are any cleaner than the hands of the FCC.
