Indeed, this is a huge breakthrough. We did research back in the 80's on photonic ALUs assuming that someone would eventually be able to fabricate optical components in Si. It took longer than we expected.
We were able to demonstrate on optical adder back then using very gross components; sometimes huge crystal chunks (barium nitrate, I think)!!! The switch worked by electrically switching the polarities within the crystal structure.
This is a dream come true.
If I had project management software, video editing, and a good MP3 player
Did you check http://freshmeat.net/ for the
software you need?
freshmeat.net accelerated my switch to Linux as
I saw more and more open source software that
could replace what I was using on windows, and
very often those programs ran on windows as well.
Even donated to many of the projects!
Have a good migration from windows.
Cheers.

You're exactly right. I ditched windows about 3 months ago. Why? I was using Gimp, Open Office (after couldn't install MS Office; don't know what the issue was), gcc, eclipse, etc. It suddenly occurred to me that I was using Linux apps, why not switch? I first installed Suse 9.1 then upgraded painlessly to 9.2. Now I'm typing this on Slackware on a triple boot system on which I modified Grub to load any of Suse, Slack, or win. There have been a few driver issues, which were easily solved by other users at the news groups.
As a bonus, I've learned a tremendous amount about how things work in the past 3 months.

I also did a search for Mozilla in these messages and came up with only one hit. Mozilla should be part of the tool box. The tech seemed to be using IE during the entire ordeal. Some of the pain may have been mitigated with a little Mozilla at the start!!!
Same problem. Haven't upgraded my phones yet though. I have Netgear wifi router and various cards in my pc's. Royal pain.
Gradually switching to Linux...
3 months ago I switched to the Mozilla browsers on all of my systems. After the recent vulnerability reports in IE, I helped my wife make the switch at work. I use Mozilla 1.6 for most of my web browsing and FireFox for development. Kudos to the Mozilla developers and congratulations!!!

PS. Still use IE when I visit the MS websites.
On my last day of active duty in the Coast Guard, as an Electrician, I was sent into the holding tank to fix some limit switches that activated the pumps. SEWAGE pumps that is. Yes, I was up to my waist! But, I had a whole table to myself at lunch:-)
