this letter linked from the article I mentioned in an earlier post. the letter is from SCO to members of congress, quoting the last paragraph:

"we take these actions secure in the knowledge that our system of copyright laws is built on the foundation of the constitution and that our rights will be protected under law. we do so knowing that those who believe 'software should be free' cannot prevail against congress and the ruling of seven supreme court justices who believe that 'the motive of profit is the engine that ensures the progress of science.'"

they may as well call all linux users a bunch of commie reds, recall mccarthy, and get the execution chambers ready :(

but you have to remember that they are doing it for business reasons. just like pharmacutical companies dump useless drugs in poverty/famine stricken countries and regions (well ok, maybe not that cynical). there's probably some tax write-off they can make, plus they get to permeate the market so that other OSs don't get a look in. i also think BG wants to make himself look a great guy, need proof? check out the BMG foundation website.

sorry about the ot post, but if anyone wants to know more about the Nestle dispute goto here.

back to M$ i think they are trying to get into the market before anyone realises there are cheaper (well free!) alternatives available. good business decision, and you could probably compare it to some of the deals apple have done in education.

  13. patently riddiculous on Perens on Patents · · Score: 1

its a shame that the first thing that these big companies do when they make a minor discovery is to patent it. its also infecting academia too, read a paper in a top journal or conference and most likely the author has already got his lawyer on the case six months previously. of course people should benefit from discovery but now it seems that exploiting your own work is at the expense of preventing others from adding to it (without paying a hefty royalty fee). its particularly disturbing when applied to software, human genes (which surely we all own), and business prctices ... none of which i think should allow patents. software is automatically copyrighted, and that should give some degree of protection to the original author. if a patent had been taken out we could all be talking about xerox computers on slashdot ... that is a scary thought :)

  19. Re:File swapping != Fewer album sales... on UK Music Industry Stomps on Imported CD Seller · · Score: 1

what the record industry doesn't understand is that a lot (not all admittedly) of people who download music _also_ buy albums ... shock horror. but I hear you say, surely these people are criminals, the lowest of scum why would they ever buy something that they could get for FREE. some people just like to try before they buy, some people actually want to support the artists, others just like collecting albums. another thing they don't understand is that ten downloaded albums is not the same as ten stolen albums ... many people would download albums that they would never even consider buying. why would you spend ten pounds on an album you're not sure about, or only think one or two tracks are any good. now I'm not saying that piracy is great and everyone should do it ... I just think that the execs in their ivory towers just don't understand their consumers and need to start looking at smarter and cheaper means of distribution. forcing a retailer to charge 2 more is never going to ingratiate them to the consumer.
