Look at the picture of the crater. Do you see the white speck in the middle of the upper left quadrant? What is that? Whatever it is, it jumped out at me as soon as I saw the photograph.
This is a good point. The Linux people tend to get up in the faces of Microsoft people and tell them how stupid or sheepish they are for running Windows.
Makes you wonder why the Linux zealots (not the majority by any means) are trying so hard if their product really speaks for itself.
My Linux servers are slightly more reliable than my Windows servers. No... they aren't perfect, but they are a little better. But I still generally like Microsoft servers for most things, even though Linux is more stable. I just have an easier time with it I guess. I will give Linux this - the software available for logging and monitoring is far superior to anything Microsoft ever thought about, and THAT's why I have Linux here.
You want Windows recommendations, a fact that some here have overlooked. Here you go:
1. Install Norton AV and set it to autoupdate quietly. 2. Install ZoneAlarm in quiet mode. Don't forget to trust your IP address/range in the properties. Otherwise, you won't be able to pcAnywhere when they need you. 3. Install the Google toolbar with popup blocker enabled 4. Install Spybot and make sure you have the BHO blocker installed. 5. Install pcAnywhere or something similar, but DON'T leave it running. Put an icon on the desktop so they can start it easily. Write a script that will show ipconfig so they can give you their IP address. 6. Turn off unnecessary services 7. Delete shares 8. Look for a good Internet article on otherwise locking down your computer. I think the NSA has several official documents that talk about what to disable. 9. EDUCATE, EDUCATE, EDUCATE. There is no substitute. If your parents are the trust everybody types, then you need to scare them a little. Hopefully, you won't need to do too much in this area given the software installed above. For instance, Norton will catch bad attachments, popup blocker will prevent most of the social engineering/marketing attempts, etc. 10. Oh yeah! Did I mention you need to GHOST the machine? 11. Check up on your parents from time to time to make sure they are O.K.
I know this may sound like a lot of trouble, but it is worth it. For you Linux zealots who believe your parents should be able to pick up Linux with little effort, you're dreaming unless your parents are wizards themselves. Save Linux for the back end, not Mom and Dad. Now that I'm off of that soapbox, I hope this helps;)
- Don't offer things like this for free
- If you do decide your work is worth something then don't jump from free to $300,000
You shouldn't offer things for free if you really want to profit. All you'll do is make yourself miserable at best. If you're really stupid you might even lose touch with reality and demand $300,000. Did he really expect them to pay? Unbelievable...
I start my car four to five times per day. That means if I live in New Mexico I can spend 2.5 minutes every day, 75 minutes every month, or 15 hours every year taking these tests.
Life is too short to put up with this nonsense. Focing everyone to do this is not the answer. Maybe we should up the penalty for driving drunk. Maybe we should suspend their license the first time, and put them away for a while the second time. Maybe having people on the street who have been convicted of DUI multiple times is not a good idea. This kind of thoughtless legislation is not the answer.
One could also make an argument for lost freedom and constitutionality issues.
Sorry but I think you are being too naive in your views
Perhaps. I'm trying to figure out this issue.
but it seems that a lot of your compatriots seem to think like you.
Exactly who are these compatriots according to you?
In many cases USA pressed to establish them. I live in Argentina, our ex president Menen will be remembered for the most corrupt government in our history. The Bush just loved him. They supported him. Bush father played tenis with him. Now is like he has the plague, everyone telling how corrupt we are now. The same with other governments here and elsewhere.
Why do you think the relationship changed? I'm just curious. I really don't know.
USA has a great deal of responsability in many events in the world and specifically in the balance of power.
I agree with this statement.
Second, the first world governments press every day for advantages for their companies. When a government try to think first in its country it will be smashed each day, even may fear a coup de etat. It happened here.
When I say charity starts at home, I mean that the U.S. government has a primary responsibility to citizens of its country. I think we should be as compassionate as possible, but only after we take care of ourselves.
Third, think of the need USA has of the rest of the world. How many innovations are from foreign students, inmigrants?
I'll be the first to tell you how diversity has benefitted the U.S. But keep in mind that these foreign students and immigrants have something to innovate because of this country. And the benefits from this work are reinvested into the country. Moreover, I believe most immigrants don't have a problem with investing in the U.S.
But back to your point, just because the individuals contribute doesn't mean those individuals' countries get the main credit. Their countries didn't do the work.
How are the cash flows from the rest of the world into USA, and what generate them? How much do you need the cheap Mexican labor force to keep the economy working?
A large part of cash flows come from imports. I'm not sure what you're asking.
We don't need the Mexican labor force at all. Globalisation is here. If the Mexicans have a problem with us, there are lots of other countries who would be happy to get our factories. This is strictly a business relationship. They provide cheap labor, we provide them our business. This is supply and demand.
1. We continue to develop popular software that is useable. Our country's core competency is producing great ideas and knowing how to profit from those ideas. The large corporations are responsible for our high quality of life.
2. The leadership for the countries on the other side continues to be corrupt and self-interest-maximizing, and the people in those countries continue in their complacency. The reason our jobs are in Bangalore right now, is because India finally figured this out.
I don't think our duty is to save the world. We're getting our asses handed to us on several fronts already, and I'm tired of it. To Hell with the people who don't have a clue. If they were on the other end they would show no compassion. Some would nuke us if they could get away with it.
I'm not uncompassionate. I just remember the phrase "charity starts at home". That, and I know the U.N. is not a great organization. There isn't a finer model of bureaucracy in the world than the U.N. It's broken and irrelevant. That's not to say that international bodies are irrelevant in general, just the U.N. in particular.
I'm struggling to understand this whole global trade situation. I could be wrong. There are just some arguments I hear that don't make sense to me.
This guy had way too much time on his hands, especially for back then. Pasting this document into Word yields 25 pages (12pt Times New Roman). According to the word count feature, there are 14,917 words.

Give an example of how some Apache server was cracked into and you'll have 500 point out that it was the admins fault (misconfiguration).
Give an example of a Windows server that must reboot everyday, and those same 500 people will blame the OS.
The logic amazes me...

This was such a long post, but worth reading it at the end. How funny! Thanks for sharing.

Have we really become so vain?

Honestly, a combination of simple factors:

"in other words, they want to make the world safe for capitalism." I must have missed your point. Why is this a bad thing?
This guy had way too much time on his hands, especially for back then. Pasting this document into Word yields 25 pages (12pt Times New Roman). According to the word count feature, there are 14,917 words.
