This is about MONEY. The people committing the crimes are CRIMINALS. Surprised at someone's clue level raising enough to speculate that criminals might target DNS to obtain cash? If the technology can be used as a means to money, it WILL be used, if it isn't ALREADY being used. The only news here is that someone other than the criminal did clue++.

    Undereducation...

Okay, google is failing me, but I remember hearing of a study of the cost of public education over the course of the last 30 years or so. The point was, the money spent per student has increased at a dramatically steeper rate than inflation during the same period of time. And we perceive our education system to be worse despite a long track record of throwing more and more money at the problem. Give students something to strive for, like science and technical jobs at NASA and associated contractors, for the next 30 years. Sounds good to me.

Oh, and while we're at it, let's do everything we can to keep the federal goverment *out* of funding (e.g., administrating) our local public schools. I'd rather pay those tax dollars locally and have a voice through the school board on how to spend it. Better chance of getting what we want versus having the entire country reach concensus.

In a past life, I used to provide ISP services to a company in Iowa that manufactures dishes used by many of the top names, including DirecTV. I checked their website, www.winegard.com, and it doesn't appear they yet have a consumer distribution channel. But if you want a bunch of dishes, these folks can probably provide them.

FWIW- I toured the plant, and saw sheet metal stamped into dishes. It was impressive.

  4. Organizing email on How Do You Organize Your Data? · · Score: 1

I came to a similar conclusion that categorical folders don't work. The email clients I use support good searching capabilities. So what I've been doing for some time with a Cyrus IMAP server is having an archive folder per year that store all email I wish to save. If I need to look something up, I don't have to manually search for the right folder. Mail clients aren't good that that. But they are good at searching for messages within a folder.

  5. An OS is but a tool... on What's Keeping You On Windows? · · Score: 1

I run Windows on 3 desktop machines at home that my family uses, including me. They are all the same OS so support is easier for me. And the choice of OS is based on the applications we need to use. My daughter uses AOL, my wife needs Office compatibility with work, and I use my computer for Quicken and multimedia applications. Linux will not run the applications for which we use our computers.

Now, the NAT box on my home network is Debian stable, cuz its the best tool for the job and rock solid. And at work I use Linux because it lets me run the tools I need to use to do my job, where Windows does not.

Technology for the sake of technology is for fanatics. The rest of us chose software based on its ability to help us meet specific needs.
