Odd, okay. Whatever. It's still something you see once and then know. It's not like I have to relearn where the button is every time I use the computer. Or if there's four clicks instead of two, I'm somehow 50% less productive.
Within the first two minutes of "exploring" the new system, you're bound to click on the settings charm and see the power button. Stick to chess... maybe computers are just too difficult for you.
Maybe it's regional? I don't get any of the petitions you or bradley list. The most popular, all time that I see is about freeing a whale in The Netherlands. I'm in Belgium.
The whole point is to make sure the person making the transaction is in possession of the card. If "card possession" is not your concern, you're talking about a completely different system.
The device as described sounds to me exactly like an app on a smartphone
A smartphone would be useless here. The key here is something you have (the card) and something you know (the pin). The device, whether built into the card or separate, and the PIN leads to creating the OTP. Maybe I'm just dense, but I don't see how a smartphone (w/o a card reader) would be any use here.
It's really not that hard to log in and transfer the money. And you'll never run out of transfers, they can't be lost and you don't force the person receiving the transfer to have to go to the bank or scan in a check to get their money. It's not as hard as you're making it out to be and there are benefits.
The Win8 ads are all the way at the "end" of the application. You have to scroll all the way to the right to see them. They don't "pop up" anywhere. They also don't block your access to the data/news/music/whatever you're after. At least that's what I saw in the weather, sports, news, etc. apps I just opened.
That is a click, and 4 key presses, followed by another click.
When I could do it in 3 clicks in either gnome or xfce.
lol... I never understood this metric. Do you spend ALL DAY opening and closing terminal programs continously so that this extra half-a-second or so adds up to significant time at the end of the day?
If "# of clicks" is your ultimate metric in life, then you pin the damn thing to the launcher and voila! only one click! Right-click -> New Window if you need another in only 2 clicks!
That's what I'm waiting for, too. I think MS going high price will allow other manufaturers to come in lower. It'll be interesting to see what comes out. My needs are pretty simple, so nearly any OS will work for me, providing the common Apps and games are available. Multi-user may end up being the deciding factor, though, if prices are roughly equal.
If you've got money to burn, good for you. MY family of 5 is not getting 5 tablets, though. Sharing is okay... multi-user is a big plus for the Surface, imo.
That feature is huge for a family. That along may swing my decision to a Surface tablet. Maybe not the first version, though (as with anything).
Honestly, the more Slashdot hate I see on "modern UI" or whatever it is, the more I figure I'll like it. I love Unity and look how that's treated around here.:)
I hate that cigar smokers get lumped in with cigarettes. I agree... they are nothing alike. I wish I could find the study, but there was one released that found no statistical difference in cancer rates among non-smokers and one-a-day cigar smokers.
It wasn't really clear in the short article, but I didn't see anything that indicated reading.doc, etc. files was unsupported. You just can't "save as.doc" something you create. If a client sends you a.doc, you can still read it, but whatever reply or edits you craft for them would have to saved in another format. I'm not a Docs user, though, so I don't know for sure.
I'm living in beer heaven, Belgium, and I miss the CO brews. Greater variety there, but really... I'm not complaining. Especially since I just finished my first Westvleteren.:D
I must not have been getting the cheap, shitty stuff, because I remember the beers running me around 45DKK in Aarhus and Roskilde when I was traveling through there. Can't remember the names of the beers I was getting, but they were pretty good.
I like to sip on a couple fingers of whiskey, scotch, bourbon or rum with my cigars. Not doing it to get drunk, but enjoy the flavors just like with beer.
I don't know anyone that does that with Vodka, though...
I did not get the email and I didn't see any links to a copy of it. Doesn't matter if you were gay or not when you received it, though. The letter didn't start off with "We, the Government, have noticed you're gay..." People who received the email previously indicated a support of gay-rights on an online partition, so Joe Bob politician or one of his lackeys assumed you'd be interested in more pro-gay stuff. This is spam, not a secret government list of the gays.
Although, a list of gays could be handy. Do you know what the queers are doing to our soil?

Moving the cursor to a corner of the screen is incredibly painful?

They're also used to "sign" online transactions, like money transfers and paying bills.
Is there an automated program that does that? That'd be pretty sweet...

Cubans are overrated. Nicaragua is where it's at.
Does it have an Apple logo on it?
That's what I was thinking, too.
Have you made any money or built up a good user base?
You can't "save as" .doc, but you can still read them, edit them, and then save in a newer file format.
