  1. Fear on Publisher Renames 'Katie.com' · · Score: 1

I don't mean to be insensitive to the topic of child abuse, but I have nagging suspicion that all the discussion about this book borders on pandering to people's fears. I've heard that statistics say most abused children are more likely to be abused by someone they know rather than complete strangers. The media has a tendency to propagate fear of the wrong things for the wrong reasons.

I can't find a link to information on it, but I recall seeing a report on how statistics proved that the topic of deaths from the drug ecstasy was exhaggerated in the UK media, when they were actually rare and paled in comparison to something that resulted in many more deaths; falling in the shower! Yet no mention was made of this in the media, nor were there any measures taken to do things like enforce safer shower designs. Ecstasy was just more eye-catching as a news item.

The author of the book, Katie Tarbox seems to be turning this into a career- she actually has a company, Katie Tarbox, Inc., and even plans to launch a school curriculum. Her lawyer, Parry Aftab, seems to be revelling in the spotlight, touting herself as "The Angel of the Internet" and boasting about her media appearances; "She regularly appears on national and international television, in national, international and regional news publications and in both business and mass market publications around the world. She has been featured in Readers Digest, People Magazine, TV Guide, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, Biography Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Seventeen, Family Circle and Ladies Home Journal, among others". Yet this is the very same woman who called Katie Jones, the owner of the Katie.com domain name and threatened that "things would only get worse" if she didn't freely hand over the domain name- and Jones had just given birth only a week before. The lawyer also spread defamatory remarks about Jones, claiming that Jones had a hidden agenda. Tarbox claims that Aftab doesn't represent her but represents her publisher, Penguin, yet there is a lot of evidence to the contrary.

All this media hype, aggressive legal action, PR damage control, and not to mention incorporation, all have the trademark characteristics of a profitable business. If this was an effort focused more on social change and education, the controversies surrounding the book would have been resolved long ago rather than having escalated to this point. There is always the danger of children coming into contact with pedophiles through the internet, but how does this statistically compare to things like the murder rate for children? What about the institutionalised rapes of women in Somalia? Why focus on this topic? Is it about reality, or is it more about pandering to the tabloid psyche?

They removed a review that I wrote about a book on Java because I pointed out (in the context of a factual review) that the author had been arrested (and plead guilty on related charges) for crossing state lines to have sex with a 13 year old girl he met on the Internet!

Perhaps you should re-post that review, but under the "Katie.com" book. I'm sure people buying that book would like to know that the store they are buying it from is also selling a book written by exactly the kind of person that "Katie.com" warns against. That would really piss off anyone who read the book and gave it a good review.

Maybe it's time to boycott RIAA and MPAA products in favor of independent labels and films. Personally, I'd like to see a united subscription service for musicians and filmmakers who don't wish to be part of the RIAA and MPAA bandwagon. The RIAA is just shooting itself in the foot, and a new market is opening up for people to bypass record companies altogether to distribute music. Music can easily be produced without record companies now. Films, however are another matter. Not that far off, though, considering that video editing has become feasible on computers.

I don't think anybody would be impressed by a "butload" of emails. Common usage suggests that a buttload is in between 3 and a dozen.

The goatse site would suggest it can be more than you are assuming. It is evident from the image that a "buttload" can comprise of one, or possibly two hard drive bays. Considering the storage capacities of hard drives, that would mean an amount significantly greater that 3 to a dozen emails. Even for the average person who would only be able to accommodate something like, say, a USB keychain drive, the possible number of emails would still remain much greater.

  14. I've been trying... on Exploring Linux Desktop Myths · · Score: 1

... to get into Linux for years. I prefer laptops, and I've had a hard time trying to install it. I have so many different distribution CDs, some bought, some downloaded, but have never actually gotten a proper installation running. I used to have a Texas Instruments 570 CDT, but none of the installations could get the display hardware working properly. There was always this border on the edge of the screen, and it made me wonder where the missing pixels were being written to. Then I got a Toshiba Tecra 740 CDT. I actually bought a separate hard drive module so I could pull out the Windows installation and stick in a Linux one. But I never was able to get it to handle the display hardware on that one either. I still have that laptop lying around, so I tried again recently, but could only get it working with 256 colors rather than the thousands it is capable of. And it is too slow to handle KDE. The colors were screwed up in the window manager I tried using that wasn't too slow, presumably because it was rendering in a limited 256 color CLUT.

Now I have a Titanium Powerbook G4. I actually bought an external 80 gig firewire drive in the hopes of being able to install Linux on it and boot off of it by simply setting it as a startup disk. I bought a three button mouse as well. I don't want to use the dual boot method, because I'd like to be able to disconnect the external drive and have a clean OS X system. I don't know if the OS X startup disk system preference setting would handle that, though. I tried a PPC Knoppix Live CD, but it would get an error and wouldn't go into KDE. It went into a German command-line mode and the keyboard mapping was all messed up. A friend of mine tells me that I should use Debian, although someone else advised I try Mandrake instead because it is easier for newcomers. I think I'd prefer to have a Debian system, though, because I presume I could install the same applications available to other debian users if I compile from source. Or I could try a PC version under Virtual PC, but I'm waiting for Virtual PC 7 to come out first before getting it. That might be a bit slow, too.

Here is a list of the different versions I've tried to install through the years; Red Hat 5.2, a previous Redhat version before that, Corel Linux, Debian 3.0r0, Debian 3.0r1, Mandrake 9.0, a previous version of Mandrake before that, Libranet 2.8, Knoppix PPC, and Debian PPC (CD won't boot). I know that this wouldn't be a problem for someone who has experience with Linux, but I don't, and all the information about installing it that I find online is pretty daunting. I still really want to get into it.

I've been waiting for the Office 2004 Professional Edition for Mac because it is supposed to come with Virtual PC 7, which is supposed to use SP2. I need it because it seems like the computer industry has been cutting support for the Mac since OS X. Hardware companies are dropping support and software companies are releasing their Mac versions without all the features they have on their Windows versions. First I thought I'd just have to wait for Office 2004 to come out. Then it came out, but not the Professional Edition, because of the Virtual PC thing, so I have to wait more. Even if I wanted to get a PC with windows, I'd have to wait. Why buy one and end up having to pay for an upgrade? That's the thing with monopolies- they charge what they want and make you wait as long as they want.
