less expensive is not equal to bad; just think of the drop in ram module prices. unfortunatelly, the performance enhancements you get with a hardware upgrade is eventually offset by the "hunger" of the next windows upgrade. then, microsoft will tell you you're hardware is "cheap" and "low-end".

  3. Tugawar on DRM More Important Than Life or Security? · · Score: 1

There is a tug of war between media corporations and the end users. The media companies would have us believe that they are protecting the artists' rights with DRM. Let us not forget that the main goal of a company is to make money for the shareholders, and that doesn't necessary include the artists who create the content. Was the world a worse place when digital media didn't exist? I don't think so. But then the audio CD was invented and media corporations made a lot more money without thinking that a disc that interacts with a computer is so much easier to copy, not only by them but by users, too. The world is being shaped by this ongoing "bat and moth" fight and it will be interesting to see what comes out of it. Personally, I would never purchase songs or videos that I cannot copy, or convert to any digital format I wish, or send a copy of to my friends. The perfect model is the printed book: I can carry it with me wherever I go, lent it to a friend, and (photo)copy parts of it no questions asked -- no proprietary, patented, DRM-protected device required. And I know that most of my friends think just like me.

But for someone like Gates, giving $100M to a charity is also good advertisement for Microsoft Corp. ("I am not so evil, see..."). On the other hand, charities could certainly use that money. Yes, I think we should thank them both but please, keep the donations private; they'll live.

You need to download and install the latest stable rt2500 driver and configuration utility from the rt2x00 Open Source Project at rt2x00.serialmonkey.com (release 1.1.0-b3 worked for me); follow the instructions in the README file. 6. Again? on The Future of HTML · · Score: 1

Time and again, we hear that the available "technology" is not good anymore and a change is in order. To who's benefit, I wonder? Which compaby has a "better technology" under wraps and has started its marketing campaign? What exactly is missing in the current web pages? HTML ensures basic functionality; extra functionality is provided through plug-ins. Installing a new browser supporting some kind of "super-HTML" language would be more cumbersome for te end user than installing a new plug-in.

  8. Re:Sadly, I think this is inevitable on Firefox Momentum Slows · · Score: 1

I've been using Firefox ever since it has become available -- that is, when it's possible to do so. The problem is, many web sites are incompatible with FF/Mozilla. The fact that FF is "standards-compliant" is irrelevant insofar as those are the sites I visit most often and their webmasters don't care about FF/Mozilla compatibility since IE dominates the market and virtually all of their clients use IE. Besides, IE under XP SP2 in conjunction with the Google Toolbar has eliminated most of the previous security concerns and annoyances. These are the reasons why, in my opinion, FF is losing ground and will continue to do so. For FF to be widely accepted, industry-wide support would be required.

That's within my power, the same way making millions of copies at virtually no cost is within the power of the entertainment and software industries.
