I must respectfully disagree. IE slows down a GREAT deal depending on how many windows I have open at any given time (IE windows, that is). And it has a tendency to crash if left alone for a little while. Can't really figure out why. Mozilla, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have this problem.

Is anyone else experiencing this bizarre bug in Mozilla that causes the words you type in a form to become invisible? They show up when I post, though.

  22. Closed Architecture != "Think Different" on Apple Moving To G5s Next Year? · · Score: 1

You've struck on Apple's biggest, saddest problem.

It's not that they make bad computers. PC weenies can go on about this for hours until their throats go dry. They'll still be wrong. The Macintosh has always been an excellent machine with fine, fast, and dependable hardware. Their OS has usually left something to be desired (until the coming of OS/X anyway), but you could run Linux on them anyway and smoke your PC friends, usually.

No, the problem has been (believe it or not) a lack of innovation. If I wanted to sit down and make a clone of a Mac, I couldn't do it. There are specifications that I'd need that simply have not been released to the public.

"But," you cry, "innovation has been Job One (pun intended) for Apple the whole damn time! Look at the iMac! The G4 Tower! W3 4r3 133t!!!"

Yes, they have done a pretty damn good job coming up with totally new ideas for the world of computing. Think, however, what would happen if every company that felt like it could develop new machines for the Macintosh platform. An EXPLOSION of new products with new features would result.

"But Apple will lose money and die!" No they won't. Especially not since they can port OS/X (based on BSD which is eminently portable) to any system they choose. And their hardware will still be top-notch. But what they STILL need, despite the success of the iMac and iBook and G4 Towers, is _market_ _penetration_. Period.
