Due to its monopoly on office software and residential OS's, Microsoft enjoys the highest margins in the industry. However, I'm not sure if I'd invest right away. Odds are that.NET is going to flounder. Java has a major head start over the.NET folks as far as courting the developers. Microsoft pissed off a big chunk of its developer community by dropping J++ and moving away from C++..NET doesn't offer anything that Java isn't offering, except that it is pretty much incompatible with any non-Windows box unless you go to the trouble of exporting XML interfaces. XBox is a mystery question where I doubt their huge cash box will help much. The competition is Sony, who has just as big of a cash box and a lifetime of experience in consumer electronics. I love how every new OS that Microsoft offers is reviewed as the greatest event in History. I'm having a hard time seeing the difference between XP and win2k. Frankly, I'm still having a hard time seeing all of that much difference between win2k and NT 4. Ok, so XP means the death of the old win95 kernel (win95, win98, winMe) for residential users and small businesses. Wow, big deal. I mean who cares about XP? It's just a continuation of the monopoly. Don't get me wrong, Windows is an excellent desktop platform (arguably the best) and many Microsoft products are excellent. But, as soon as they stray from what they know (desktops), they start to suck real bad. DCOM, MTS, COM+ welcome to the hall of losers. My prediction: BizTalk checks into Hotel NoUsers. This whole thing about Windows leaping into the high end server market is laughable. Samba on Linux for Christ's-sake runs faster than NT 4.0 as a CIFS server (an CIFS is in the kernel space on NT). And as for IIS, I can only wonder about what idiots actually use that rat trap. IIS is as secure as convertible parked in the Watts District of LA around 3am. SQL-Server is fairly reliable, but it has its upper limits, and certainly is no gem compared to the other proprietary jobs out there. Think about all of the other crappy products Windows has, like Visual Source Safe (pitty to all who have to bear that piece of shit). Really, it comes down to IE and Office. I'd even throw MSdev in the mix as a great IDE (although the build system sucks and NMake is fucking useless). I wish Microsoft would just say fuckit and drop everything except for OS work, Office and IE work. Those are good products. Skip the rest. Trim out the lame shit. Whatever happened to that forced break up plan? I liked the idea of the Offic stuff being seperate because it would translate into Office for Linux.
Exercise is the panacea for so many things. Back Pain can be caused by general immobility in your spine for long periods of time. Your lower spin is connected to your ass with many tiny muscles. These guys are constantly tugging with each other in order to keep your spine straight. When you sit in one position for long periods of time, certain muscles get stretched too much (you get the picture). Best solution, garaunteed cure (unless it's cancer) is to take regular breaks and do some kind of basic movement. Then as often as you can, thrice a week, etc, try doing something more active like swimming, or lifting heavy boxes(um scratch the heavy lifting bit).
Mandrake is a great Linux Distro for reasons we all know and love. But this Donation thing demonstrates a selfishness that has outdone Microsoft at their worst. Open Letter to Mandrake: If you want to raise some funds, sell some equity or barrow the money. If you feel that your work is a charity, declare yourself as a non-profit organization.

It was that episode of Next Generation that guest starred Jimmy Dewhan (Scotty). In the climax scene, Scotty and Laforge were trapped on a space ship being crushed by these huge doors. The Enterprize rushes in to save them. The only things keeping Scotty's craft in one piece are the shields. The Enterprize then BEAMS Scotty and Laforge throught the shields onto the saftey of the Enterprize. Now, the golden rule of Star Trek from day one, was "You Can't Beam Through Shields". They made up some bullshit reason why they were able to beam through the shields but it didn't matter. My heart was broken, and I never watched an episode since.
Micro carbon soot from diesel combustion in automobilies is a deadly carcinogeon and causes lung cancer. You know that lovely smell when a truck or bus drives by. Well, that's diesel. Diesel proponents say that magic "filters" can do the job, however, application of such filters reduces engine efficiency making such engines no more effiencent than gasoline. There are many new technologies on the horizon, including a high pressure combustion which works much like diesil but works with any hydrocarbon that are far better than diesel.
Yeah, I don't think its a close call even. LOTR will demolish Star Wars. The only thing Star Wars has in its favor are sweet campy lines. We'll have to wait and see with LOTR in this respect. But it will be tough to outdo, "I find your lack of faith disturbing," "Luke! Luuuke!" and "Jumping into hyperspace aint like dusting crops kid" LOTR is so serious and grim, I doubt it will have anything like this. The camp factor in StarWars is what makes it appealing.
Embedded Programing is ruled by C. Only just recently are we starting to see some C++ creep into this sacred forbiden zone. Embedded Programers live in a special culture all to their own. They don't mix with the rest of the world and they hold true to the standards set out in the begining. Ever notice that most embedded programers are like in their late 40's and late 50's! These guys know that when it comes to embedded systems, the fucking language you program in is irrelevant, so you might as well chug along with what you know. Even if Java were able to increase its Realtime abilities, extend direct memory control to the engineer etc, I doubt these guys would ever abandon their beloved C/C++.

Yes, the Similarian only briefly mentions that he was reduced to nothing and unable to assume form again. I've always interrpreted this to be inline with what happened to Melcor minus the fanfare. Sauron's banishment isn't really mentioned because he's not as significant as Melcor. However, there is no specific mention of Sauron's fate in the literagy. He probably did like Sarumon and figured why even bother trying to come back.

I couldn't agree more. Star Wars sucks. Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest works in English Literature. Star Wars reads like it was written by a 12 year old. "General Han Solo" I think sums it up. So far on writting, the ball is with LOTR.
I know this is going to get flamed beyond belief, but we all know where this is leading. A war that rivals the Windows vs. Linux fued, dwarves the KDE vs. Gnome rivalry, snuffs out the Emacs vs. Vi debate and makes World War II seem like a petty disagreement:
The Lord of the Rings vs. Star Wars.
The battle lines are being drawn, and the forces are mustering. The Jedi are rallying behind the Force, while the Rangers summon the courage of the Numenor. The Skywalker family against the Isildur lineage. Darth Vader vs. the Nine. Obewan up against Gandalf the Gray. Dead/Ghost Obewan up against Gandalf the White. Bobafet vs. the Balrog. Storm Troopers vs. Orcs. I can feel the calm before the storm.
You can sniff Monitors from up to 1000 yards away (often through most kinds of walls) with highly sensitive (an perfectly aimed) tranceivers. The tranceivers pick up the monitor radiation from the tube gun and can basically aquire and reproduce its input signal.
Whats interesting here is perhaps the biggest issue surrounding the computer: I/O. Intel, Sun, HP, Compaq, plus few dozen others are pushing Infiniband. However, AMD is pushing HyperTransport. Hypertrans seems like more of a local I/O solution (replacement for PCI-X), while Infiniband is more of a remote I/O replacement (or competator) to Ethernet. What are other peoples read on this issue?
yeah dead alive was sweet. Especially the lawn mower scene. Christofer Lee, who claims to have read LOTR each year since it was written, also felt that Jackson was the best director for the job.
Good strategy but hard. I try to remind myself that Peter Jackson is the loser than brought us the Frighteners. And that some of the casting is a little odd. Plus, this is Hollywood we're talking about. These gerks haven't made a good picture in decades. But, the biggest problem with most movies today is the weak writing. Knowing that one of the greatest authors of the English Language is involved makes it difficult to be a pessimist.
And that Frighteners movie was Michael J. Fox which was putrid. Frankly, he is worrisome, but the Director is secondary to the script, and well, as far as the writing goes, we should be covered.
If you wrote a COM object in a DLL and used the strict GPL with no ammendments (say like Linus' ammendments to the linux kernel's GPL), nobody could use the DLL without beign GPL'd. Now, if you stated in your licence that use of the IDL methods (public API) was excempt, things would be different. The client/server case would not violate the GPL because in the client/server model the client and the server are recognized to be independent programs (your browser is a different program from the web server). However, if your client server model were something a DCOM server and a DCOM client, they would fall under the GPL, because the same portion of the Program (the DCOM object) exists in both Programs.
Try it. Building GNOME on Solaris was a complete pain in the arse. http://www.clanger9.demon.co.uk/computer/gnome/ is a list of the various hacks to build on Solaris (no longer nessessary).
Benchmarks? Compiling the kernel to benchmark a filesystem? Hmmm. Sorry but, No. How about that "real-world" random write program? Give me a break people. These are not valid benchmarks which was clearly stated the first time this story was posted. Why/. seems to think it's interesting is beyond me.

Get back at them by calling up their customer support and feed them lines like:

"I'm trying to install but this little naked man keeps appearing on my screen yelling, 'DOOTY!DOOTY!'"
"I'm trying to watch the DVD release of your movie, but my player keeps ejecting the disk."
