I don't know why they even bothered to mention the Envy 5600 in the story:
Instead of building a specialized printer from scratch, HP recommended the HP Envy 5600.
Except they removed the fax capability, removed the copy capability, removed the scan capability, removed the glass, 3D printed a whole new paper handling mechanism, changed the rod+printer carriage system so it would operate in zero G, replaced a whole slew of parts with fire-retardant plastic and added a bunch of absorbent pads to capture any stray ink drops.
Sounds to me like they built a specialized printer from scratch.
They can now sell the HP Envy 5600 "as used in Space!!!"
I can imagine a lot of slashdot space...enthusiasts (don't say nutters)...falling for it.
When people realize that web marketing is not as effective as touted, that's when the bubble will burst big time.
If everyone's like me they consciously avoid any product that is pushed at them through web marketing/advertising. So it's not just ineffective, it's actually counter-productive.
Actually, I believe current thought is that pyramids weren't built by slave labour, and Egypt had the wealth to afford it when they didn't need their farmers in the fields.
I mean, yeah, I'm sure a lot of people died because workplace safety standards weren't really a thing then, but I don't think it was due to throwing away the lives of whip-driven slaves.
Thanks, I thought I had read something similar recently.
I imagine quite a lot of people died in Medieval times building cathedrals.
This is simply false. I do not believe that God exists for the same reason I don't believe Father Christmas or the Tooth Fairy exist, which is because there is nothing to show that they do exist.
When comparing across time different time periods, the rule is simple: if white westerners used to do it and non-western non-whites are doing it now then the former are at fault.
e.g.
Me: ISIS just burnt someone alive, the fucking savage bastards.
SJW: But what about the Spanish inquisition!
Wood is a really scarce resource.
In France? Or the rest of north Europe for that matter? Ever checked google earth?
The rest of your comment is rather stupid, as growing wood and dying wood and rotting wood is a zero sum game. It does not affect the CO2 level at all.
Hey fuck stick. Deforestation is a real problem world-wide. It's called the world... damage a climate locally and there are still ripple and global effects. Who's the moron now?
This is France, not the Amazon being denuded by US-owned multinationals.
See, the difference is social media is something you use to interact with your friends and family and share information.
It's not as black and white as that. People who post comments on Twitter or selfies on Instagram aren't generally talking to people they know in real life.
Oh good, we've rebranded AI, and now we've rebranded social media as "anything with a forum? "
I've been consuming / posting on slashdot for almost 20 years, and I don't and won't ever have an account. How is this social media exactly ?
Slashdot is as much social media as Twitter. People post comments, reply to comments, and so on. Whether I'm replying to user number 99999999 or AC is irrelevant, I don't know you either way.
I doubt many people using Twitter know the person they're communicating with in real life.
Even the best thumb typists are still slower on a phone than they would be (given sufficient time to become proficient typists) on a proper keyboard, display, and desktop environment. Hunt'n'peck is still hunt'n'peck, even on a glass screen.
Since "mobile internet usage" includes a lot of Candy Crush etc the inability to type text accurately is of secondary interest to most users.
is that they are willing to look long and hard at their mistakes so they can do better in the future. That's
an incredibly valuable trait. (Disclaimer: never served, but spent many years working with military and
ex-military).
I am not an expert, but I thought the whole point of the story is that they keep crashing their boats? This would suggest they aren't in fact learning from their mistakes, or is each crash caused by something new and unique?

How the hell do you have "Blockchain skill"? That doesn't even make sense.
Only someone without Blockchain skill would say that.

I 'cashed out' a car, and a fucking nice one for that matter. :)
In a pyramid scheme, there are always some winners if they get in early enough. Just saying.
I'll get my coat.
Maybe I should have hash-tagged #sarcasm, or is that still too subtle these days?
You could do a big ***SARCASM ALERT*** up front like people do with spoiler alerts. But people would just ignore it and call you a poopy-head anyway.
"9 to 5" isn't slavery. The other shift (called night shift) from 5pm to 9am is real slavery.
If you're working 16 hour shifts regularly you're doing something wrong.
slavey was invented by black people in africa
So does that mean they're more advanced than white people? Not sure of your point here.
The Egyptians where primitive, not stupid. They where just as intelligent as anyone alive today.
Exactly. Human beings have not made some massive evolutionary leap over the last five thousand years.

So what? You could probably find a star or two they all aligned with 20,817 years ago, it wouldn't prove that was when they were built.
In the original Sumerian writing, from which these words are derived from the word "Gir", which is the first and original word for "God".
Gir is very much like Grr which is what dogs do. And dog spelt backwards is god. Coincidence? I leave it for you to decide.
an atheist has faith that God does not exist

Normal person: both are wrong.

Russian wood is not very common on the Western European market.
Plenty of Russian wood on PornHub.
I think OP was somehow confusing WW2 with the Great Fire of London in 1666 when many of the buildings were indeed made from wood.
It's barely possible that they're not building 120 storey log cabins.
There's no such thing as "intellectual property."
I imagine the IP lawyers earning large amounts of money would disagree.
In 5 years you'll log into your bank using biometrics captured on your phone.
You can sign in with a fingerprint on most phones now.
Yet here I am wasting all of that potential pretending to be a cow.
The same would apply to 99% of posts on the internet, whether from a phone or mainframe supercomputer.
