i think debian.org is also done in CVS, but im not sure, but from what i hacve seen, it appears to be a common practice in colaberative open source projects. and as for how it works, im guessing you set you www-root to the cvs repository, or have the webserver do a checkin every 5 minutes.
im sorry, but this is not at all relevant, he coppied the specs for 2 of the many wired nics that support a boot rom, the question was about wireless cards, not wired. Lots of wired ethernet cards support a boot rom, my $6 rtl8139 cards do. It appears the original poster just searced the web for "nic" "wireless" and "boot" and copied some text without even reading it. it should be modded off topic at best.
quick note, radio is not a free for all every place besides the USA in most(all?) countries, there are restrictions on radio very similar to those in the USA, many of them are goverends byt he ITU.
FIrst, i havent seen a distro in several years that you cannot setup an ext2 partition in the installer.
debian has all the faetures you mentioned(but they are targted to more advanced users).
a few days ago installed debian on my laptop with devfs and reiserfs root, and an ext2/home(so i can share it with freebsd). now all admit it was not all point and click, I didnt use the standard debian install disks, i used the reiserfs install discs. And then i put a custom kernel on the disk, and a newer version of mkreiserfs on a seperate floppy, but if i had chosen, i could have worked off the regular reiserfs install floppys.
Debian has a software update utility, being aslashdot reader, im sure you have heard of it, apt-get. And debian does have custom managment utilitys, there called bash and emacs.
if i wanted gui configuration utilitys, and other things to hide the details from me, i would proably use mandrake, but i like editing config files, i like knowing exactly what is happening on my system. Thats why i use debian.
i use devfs, it works great, im using it with reiserfs root. In my opinoin, it is a lot easier to setup a machine with devfs than without. Wondering if linux sees your serial port, look in/dev/tts, did it see that new harddrive,/dev/discs. I have yet to encounter a single non-devfs compatable driver. The only problem i have ever had with devfs is sound apps not working correctly, and all that took was a few symlinks, which would have been made automatically if i used devfsd, but i dont, i think it works fine without it. And i dont think that there is any hassel in switching back, unless you dont know much about linux. But why would you want to switch back? its a non-issue.

umm, why is this to bad? The fact that is it is written in java means they can run it on whatever hardware they have, with minimal hassel, because it is OS independant. Also, less security worries as java is inherently more secure.
I know blacksmiths who have been making what they refer to as damascus steel blades for years. Most of it is made by heating and pounding large steel cables. I guess it isnt the same as the old amascus steel, but it definitley has the look.

IRC may not be the greatest protocol ever, but it work, and there is an irc for basically every platform. I can go and download 3 different irc clients for my palm pilot right now, i cant download an silc client for it.
Also, i dont see that this solves any problems with irc that havent already been solved. There has been irc over ssl for a while, it is no to widly used, but there are places that use it. There is authentication via nickserv. One of the ircds has hostname cloacking so people cant get your hostname. And as far as being scaleable, irc is very scaleable, a single server can easily handle 30,000 connections, and it is not to difficult to make a net of 20 server. Using routing servers makes this even more scalable.

well, i hate to break it to you, but you use lossy compression all the time. gif, jpeg, and mp3 are all lossy compression, as ar most other image and audio compression schemes.
