Just last week we were all ment to assume that Dell (oops, I mean Intel) wasn't ready to ship dual core until Q1 of next year...
Now all of a sudden -- out of nowhere -- they launch a surprise attack and shipped the cores early, even before AMD's announced launch date. Sounds like some VERY hefty competition for AMD. They had been claiming all along that they would be the first with dual cores an it was even used as an "excuse" for Dell to talk about starting to sell AMD chips specifically because of this feature.
AMD had better look out! Their stock price will probably take a plunge due to this surprise announcement.
"If there's a problem maintaining compatibility between Ubuntu and generic Debian, it's probably because some of the desktop GUI libs are changing very rapidly."
I doubt it. Nothing to do with "rapidly". Everything to do with Debian releasing obsoleted versions of desktop libraries with their releases (ie. sarge is using an obsolete version of KDE 3.3 and will never upgrade to the newer versions. Debian's answer is to wait for the next release for a newer KDE. Funny thing is they said that last time with Woody when they released KDE 2.2 when 3.1 was already out. Pathetic...
So i agree with everything you say. But I just think it isn't so much to do with fast paced desktops. More to do with Debian not willing to install desktop software which hasn't already been obsoleted.
Exactly. Debian will learn a lot about this. They are already working on solutions on their mailing lists. They have a WiKi up for how to improve the release process and what major overhauls need to take place in order to be competative...
I think this is just friendly competition. But it is a godsend for us Debian users who are sick of installing KDE 2.2 in Woody. Grose.
Definately not the only one. Debian has become stale. But I don't think this will be the One Big Fork like Xfree86. Instead it will serve as a wakeup call for Debian to collaborate with other projects a little better. Not to mention maybe they will overhaul their release process to actually release a distribution with desktop software in it which isn't 12-24 months old already.
I have gone through several of the D-Link USB 2.0 powered hub. On both mac and PC. no problems with 1.0 or 2.0 high speed support whatsoever.
If you have already double checked the cable, then you might have a defective hub. It happens with every brand. If replacing the hub doesn't fix it, I'd be willing to bet it is a device specific conflict with your device+hub combination. This is usually a problem with the generic USB driver the mac supplies. The only thing you can do is wait for apple to release an update.
Which routers for 120$ or less have QoS built in? I think you are mistaken. Normal routers for less than 120 don't have QoS. Not to mention fully preconfigured QoS for most everyday applications.
Not to mention it has 4 ports of GigEthernet.
The lights and colors just make it look cool on the shelf. It isn't what is selling the router. You obviously didn't RTFA.
I have been reading about S Corp.. is that pretty much the way to do it nowadays for small business? I read and heard from accountants though that if you don't give yourself a decent salary, they will go ahead and count all your dividends as sallary and go ahead and tax you the self employment tax plus income tax even if you filed it as a dividend... So they said if I gave myself a 30K/year sallary, and then 100K as dividend, that is OK. but if i give myself 1$/yr salary and 130K/year dividend, then they will want 80K at self employment because i fudged the numbers... you know of any truth in that? (assuming you get audited)
What about all the non high school kids who are earning minimum wages? They make up about 75% of all minimum wage workers!
These are people who didn't go to college, cannot go to college, and their only chance for a higher paying job is to go to a tradeschool but since that is even too expensive for most minimum wagers they are stuck.
You act like everyone has a chance. If that were the case then there would be enough jobs in the market which are going unfilled which pay more than minimum wage. There isn't.
Agreed. The Kubuntu distribution is definately more polished. The desktop just feels right.
I am a big fan of GNOME but the more revisions of Kubuntu I go through the better KDE looks every day for me. I have a Fedora box and GNOME dominates on it. But I just can't stop thinking about how nice fedora would look with a polished KDE on it similar to Kubuntu's release. Imagine the power of KDE with the simplicity of GNOME? That is what I think about when I use Kubuntu.
Well I believe that it is perfectly legal to ask up front for past crimes. If the applicant doesn't disclose them then there is no reason to hire him.
Now that might vary from state to state but I am pretty sure you don't have to hire someone if they don't disclose background information which you (legally) ask for up front in the application process.
They are hitting the limits of the physical world with their current known solutions. Until there are more breakthroughs and improvements in chip fabrication, you won't see many 4GHz chips any time soon.
Just as an example, for intel to be able to get to 3.8GHz they had to decrease their chip performance significatnly. So now their IPC (instructions per clock) are lower on the 3.8GHz chips than previous P4 chips. Every time they bump up the GHz they have to extend the pipeline. This lowers IPC.
So you have this race between the physicists who are in charge of coming up with innovative ways to overcome physical limitations in chip fabrication, and you have the engineers redesigning their chip to work around these limitations. It is an uphill battle both ways and they have finally hit the ceiling where it is significantly detrimental to cost/performance at anything higher (for now).
Let me explain. They release a chip they know they can clock higher on a whim. Then when Intel comes out with a faster chip, they don't have to do anything fancy. They have room to grow built into their current core. All they have to do is certify the next chips off the assembly line at the higher clock, and throw the ones that don't pass back down to the lower clock, and all is well.
It is a technique where you milk the consumers for all they are worth, THEN drop the prices later when you are forced to by the competition. It is nothing more than the bottom line. It is a requirement that you make all the margin you can while you can and worry about cutting the margins after you know you need to.
Snap back into reality and you realize that almost nobody is capable of making a decent living and maintain 100% of their principles. The society we live in generates the opposite.
It isn't human nature. It is the system we live in. Until that system might change you will always have the problem where your reputation in the business world changes significantly simply because you stand behind what is right. You see, there are too many potential haters out there which have the power to (and will!) ring your neck on a whim simply because they are religiously or politically against your ideas. The repurcussions(sp?) are limitless.
How on earth do you mod this funny? It is not only a serious point, but in no way is it funny. Mod must be smoking dank. Too right wing to be smoking swag.
Or you can think of it like this. You agree to put their machine in your store so they can make money. In exchange, you get a cut of the profits.
However, they put a piece of garbage machine in your store and you are forced it keep it running on its last leg with your own money. Now who is the sucker? I understand there are risks involved. But at some point they need to just replace the machine with a new one if it is a lemon
(not assuming the parent's is a lemon, but the same idea applies to all broken machines, just in a less sevear way)
And the fast food industry is doing a LOT to stop out hunger... Every day they provide lunch to millions of starving americans.(sarcasm)
The starving 3rd world isn't an excuse. Starving people don't need more beef. They need more food. Using them as an excuse to farm cows using unhealthy practices is just plain ignorant.
Maybe he should have used mad cow disease as a better example. One disease which has significant evidence of being directly contributed by the fast food industry.
Actually, Crusoe and Efficion both use less power while at 100% load than the Centrino. They also both use lower average power under "normal" circumstances (like browsing the web, using MS WORD, etc...)
You might argue that centrino runs at 100% less than efficion runs at 100% under the same benchmark. But you can't argue that this outweighs the facts that efficion and crusoe both use less power overall.
Ever heard of condoms? Birth control? Now you can't use the "its not OK to use those" argument because you just dismissed it above.
Fucking your brains out is a human instinct. If people want to do it and you want to think you have the 'self control' not to, then that is theirs and yours problem. But don't sit around and back someone up who says birth control is bad, and THEN say that fucking is bad. Give me a fucking break.
Uhh, no it doesn't. Centrino (Which is just a Penium M, a Pentium 3 core with tweaks) actually uses more power than the transmeta chips. The problem is that transmeta chips were not put into any good laptops. Sony made one. Not many people buy high end sony laptops. A couple other companies made some tablets. The tablet industry was dead from day 1. There were a couple other laptops which used it but never came out in the US for a reasonable price. All of them had smaller batteries in them.
If you take a centrino laptop and slap a transmeta motherboard and CPU in it you will definately get better battery life. Those are just the facts.
You would probably be better off replacing the circuit board on the drive with the same board from another drive of the same model. Would get rid of the passwords and would not require nearly as much specialty work as it would to remove the platters and read it with special machineary.

Does interest as taxable income have to also pay the self employment tax? That is ~12% and then there is the Medicaide tax.
Last time I figured in my tax on interest I didn't end up paying the self employment tax on that portion.

What kind of log did you just crawl out from underneath? Can you please explain to slashdot how this might be even REMOTELY illegal?

What's wrong with screwing your brains out? Because the bible says not to?
That isn't a very convincing argument in my book.
