Consider that we already have this fundamental technology (albeit in a cruder form) with VCR, but the majority of film viewers are completely incapacitated by a simple red and white FBI warning pasted at the header of each tape. That flimsy exercise of authority is enough to keep the common consumer in check.

A very parochial view. It doesn't scare a billion Chinese.

But the VCD scene is ENORMOUS. In Asia, its the dominant format - and there are a damn sight more people in Asia than in the US and Europe combined.

The reason is just price: pirate VCDs cost about US$2 per movie, in places like Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. Piracy is rife. And we get movies on VCD before they come out at the cinema - Star Wars 1 was out in HK just days after the US premiere, for less than the price of a cinema ticket. Shite quality, but there you go.

I also use a TrackPoint as my everyday pointing device - my work PC is an IBM ThinkPad. It really does seem to save time by not having to move away from the keyboard, and - once you get the hang of it - is pretty much as fast and accurate as a mouse. For example, I have no problems doing the occasional bit of photo editing with it.

A huge advantage of the ThinkPads (at least it used to be, but the current 600s don't seem to support it) is being able to use the TrackPoint simultaneously with an external mouse. This gives you the option, and variety seems to be what you need to prevent RSI.

The only drawback is that occasionally the thing gets its wires crossed and drifts slowly across the screen by itself. It will compensate once you get to the edge of the screen, but it can get annoying.

I use a M$ mouse and curvy keyboard at home, which have proved very comfortable so far (only about 3 weeks). But I'll experiment with different gadgets, I think, including wireless ones. Hey, if I put the screen at low enough resolution I could operate it from the sofa!

Absolutely. Having singularly failed to learn from the Word/Excel/Access Macro Virus blight, Micros~1 has now added macro functionality to everything else, including people's main interfaces with the net.

There is no reason for scripting to be available in an email client, it's just asking for trouble. And to make it an implementation that can actually open and edit files - just crazy, crazy stupid.

Because nobody except rabid PCers would understand you. A great suggestion for if and when the majority - or even a significant minority - both understand and prefer the use of an agreed neutral pronoun.

In science fiction, sexless individuals are often described as 'it'. But people don't like that applied to themselves; it has insulting overtones.

However it IS generally acceptable to use the gender-neutral plural: they, their etc.
