You also have to remember that the FSF dosen't endorse the "open-source" banner, but rather the "free software" banner. Although the two camps have very similar ideas, it seems unlikely RMS and company would go to court over a name they don't even support. See fsf.org for their position on free vs Open.
I actually found it as a matter-of-fact type position. I didnt read it as a do this or else stance at all. ESR is known for stating his opinion clearly, without the usual candy coating or bullshit you get from other writers.
People who claim its bloat have no idea what they are talking about. 1) The kernel has support for PPC, Alpha, i386, Strongarm, Sparc, and other processors. You dont need all this? Delete the files you dont need. 2) You compile a custom kernel. Anything that you do not need does not get compiled in to the runtime kernel. You dont need scsi support? Dont compile it in, and if you are that anal about disk space, delete the scsi source tree directory. 3) I could go on more about this, but most readers either are well informed, and those who arent probably wont get it anyway.
I noticed Alan Cox mentioning on the Kernel mailing list that Linux 2.3 was going to add many of the features mentioned in the above post, including support for more then 65k users. Sorry I dont have the exact URL.
I knew right away after I read this article, and saw the position that theos-software was taking that they would not "win" here no matter how high-priced the lawyers. They could have asked me how to deal with the situation properly, like a normal human would have, I woulda told them, and It would have been better for all parties involved.
Obviously these lawyers don't know anything about the hacker culture. To think Theo would just sign those papers and hand over the domain without making an issue about it is naieve.
The one thing I cant stand about ANY of the current browsers is when I open up a new browser,it pops up a completely new window. Why? I think the guys designing mnemonic got this one right. They use a "notebook" widget at the very bottom of the browser where you can tab through all the different sites. Check out for an example of what I am talking about. Does anyone know if this functionality is being added to mozilla? _Underflow
