Okay, granted the 'desktop metaphor' is old and possibly not the most useful (especially to power users).
Do you have any links / discussion about the alternatives? Because I hear your sentiment from time to time but there's usually little in the way of tangible alternatives proposed..

As a comparably new convert to Debian (I run knoppix at work for web development) I'm interested to hear comparisons between Debain and Slack.
Both seem to have similar advantages over other distros ( package management, power and configurability) and both are seen as slightly 'newbie hostile'.
I've tried strains of linux that weren't Debian (SUSE and Red Hat have their nice points, but both lasted about a day) - what's to reccomend me to Slack?
The next time a Hitler sweeps across Europe there probably won't be the remnants of the British Empire fueled by the American industrial complex to defend countries like Switzerland.
Bush is nowhere near Europe yet - there's still the entire middle east left!
blearrgh.
Methinks the major asset Google has at this point in time is its brand. Think Apple through all those years they made shithouse hardware (pre OS X) - it was hard to find anyone who had an opinion who wasn't swept into the starry-eyed Mac enthusiasm for what was, at that time, inferior hardware and software with a higher price tag (than Wintel)**
Apple failed to disappear because marketing (and initially leagues-ahead technology) left such an impression ("mindshare" if you like) that they effectively rode off that for years.
Google seems to incite a similar loyalty and feeling of 'cool' among it's users. Perhaps that's something that can save them when they go up against MS properly, and they rely on people to actively install / use alternatives to MSN or LongHornBar...
** Disclaimer - they seem to be back on the horse now, and I quite like OS X and G5s
I'm surprised with all this PHP vs PERL talk that no-one's mentioned that ZEND says you can use PERL from within PHP, as of release 5.
Does no-one else find this highly interesting?
Anyone tried it yet?

Bwahahahaha! Starbucks! Gourmet!?? Yeah right. Mmm. Is McDonalds in this "gourmet" list too?
My site (www.droppinghoney.com) is ranked #1 in teoma ('dropping honey') and I've never heard of them before, let alone paid them.
