People voting for a candidate are just buying into the game. Here is the secret. The secret is, there is no secret. Both parties serve special interests. Both parties are special interests. America wins when the Republicans and Democrats are equally represented in the three branches of government. America loses when the Republicans have 100% control, or the Democrats have 100% control. Right now, the Republicans have 100% control (House, Senate, President). The House and Senate aren't switching hands anytime soon. That is why we need a Democrat president.
You can bicker and argue all you want about who is the better candidate, or what they stand for, or what they promise. But it doesn't really matter; Democracy is dead when one party controls everything.
On November 2, you can all vote for your favorite candidate. I will be voting for Democracy.
If I'm paying thousands of dollars in tuition (and working my ass off to pay that tuition), I would be happy to have a professor that deals with assholes in such a manner. When someone is being disruptive in class and taking away from my educational experience, they need to be bitch-slapped. If you don't have basic manners by the time you reach college, you need some hard knocks for your own good before getting into the real world.
Alright. Let's think straight here. You're paying thousands of dollars in tuition, and working your ass off to pay that tuition. Now who are you more likely to be upset at; the student, for talking in class? Or the professor, for wasting your time and money for public reprimand instead of education?
My roommate is from Germany and he says that an Austrian man living in his home town for 40 years is still considered an Austrian by everyone in the area. I don't want to apply a stereotype on all of Europe, but I don't think tolerance will come so quickly (and it may never come). The EU may be united in currency, but there is a lot of cultural conflict in the entire area. There is even internal conflict in countries like Germany where the east and west have completely different views.
Don't forget, even the United States has trouble getting along with itself. Not just the political parties, but the North and the South still see each other as "separate but equal". Just because you belong to the same state/country/alliance doesn't mean you'll get along.
Microsoft realizes the strength and limitations of its own monopoly. If even 50% of people pay for Windows, that's a ton of profit for Microsoft; but Microsoft would rather have the other 50% use pirated Windows than to have the other 50% use OSX or Linux.
Teach kids about the heroes of science. When Oppenheimer finished the bomb, everyone wanted to take nuclear chemistry and physics. When Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, everyone wanted to take physics. When Watson and Crick discovered the structure of DNA, everyone wanted to take biology.
The kids need to believe in themselves; there are so many people along the way who will tell them they can't do it, they can't solve this or that, they aren't smart enough. What they need is encouragement.
Who named the Mars rovers? It was a little girl from an orphanage. Wow. Not so obscure compared to Oppenheimer. Science is the one law - the ONLY law - that we are all united by. Religion and politics have failed at this. And if the kids can leave your classes with an appreciation for that, they'll stay interested and determined for the rest of their lives.
What if it's just 100GB email and nothing more, nothing less? Google wants customer loyalty; that's a good enough reason to do this. Their IPO is coming soon, everyone's watching the company. But what if Microsoft's search engine is actually good? What if Microsoft's search engine comes bundled with all future versions of windows, and windows updates (and believe me, it will). What if Microsoft sets your default home page to its own search engine EVERY TIME you update?
At least with an e-mail service, Google will be standing on two feet when this happens. People will want to check their GMail no matter what search they are using. Google isn't even close to the financial power of Microsoft right now, so it needs to prepare for the attack...
Maybe Pixar leaving Disney was a good idea, maybe this is a good idea. But look at the Apple mouse; it still has one button. That's not business, that's stubbornness. And I think there's a lot of that still left over in how Apple does business in general.
The reason UO was so different was BECAUSE it had player killing and thieves. Believe it or not, these actually balanced the economy and prevented a flood of gold. As soon as the "safe-world" was introduced, there was massive and endless inflation that persists today.
When there is a common threat, there is more incentive to band together for the common good. I'd rather slay thieves and murderers than a dragon that will just respawn. And the risk of losing items or gold just makes victory sweeter when I mount their head on my wall.
From what I understand, Lineage 2 doesn't have a real subscription user base. Since it's based in South Korea, where internet cafes are more popular, not everyone who is playing the game is paying a monthly fee to do so; rather, the internet cafe gets Lineage licenses and anyone can make an account, counting as individual subscribers. I *think* this is how it works, but again, don't quote me on it:)
Right now, Final Fantasy Online has more subscribers than EverQuest (worldwide). I don't know the exact numbers, but EQ is between 400-500k and FFXI is between 500-600k. I think Final Fantasy's astronomical growth rate demonstrates that the current MMORPG market is not saturated.
Personally I'm glad Microsoft is giving Brad McQuaid the opportunity to take back the MMORPG title. A good choice, but Richard Garriot would have been better. Richard Garriot created the first version of Ultima Online with $250,000 and a handful of hobbyist text MUD designers. And UO, with graphics relatively unchanged since 1996, is the third most popular MMORPG with around 250k subscribers. Imagine what Garriot could do with some real money!
Well for once, I'd like to say best of luck to Microsoft. Mythica was obviously not going anywhere. And Sony needs a nice ass whopping after ruining Planetside and SWG:) McQuaid may just have what it takes to bring the fun back to MMORPGs.

Something has been designed. It's called duct tape and it fastens securely over the movier-goers mouth.

impending name change... FireSoft!
Of course we need 2 gigs of RAM! How else could we run the new and improved animated Paperclip?
Maybe they should have come out with Directed Smell first.
What about the Lucy Liu bot? "I'll never forget you Fry." *smoke burst* "MEMORY DELETED."
It only takes you 5 days?!

I'm glad they're testing this in the Bay Area. I always thought California could use more traffic.
