I think this shows how much of Microsoft's success depends on being preloaded onto computers. The home version of XP is $200. And thats with no Office. With Office, the combined price is $600US, more than the cost of some full computers.
Thats a pretty good indicator of how important OEMS are to Windows. I haven't ever got 80% off for buying in bulk, much less 93%. If it wasn't for OEMs choosing peoples OSes for them, Windows would be losing a lot of market share fast.
It's about an old video game with really bad translations, so bad that they have a cult following. I think it was wing commander. You can see the famous part here :
Also consider that an extremely LARGE proportion of livesaving drugs are produced by those EVIL profits here in the US. What do you think will happen when the Feds dictate prices? All the research dollars will dry up and we will see far less miracle drugs.
Why is the assumption here that the government would somehow stupidly neglect research? We don't neglect military research, and that is managed by the government. We spend quite a bit on it, as a matter of fact.
Also I bet the government research wouldn't involved developing 5 different treatments of 'acid reflux disease', and wouldn't waste money buying 5 commercials on every station every hour and inserts in every magazine in the country.
Not to mention the private overhead of paying your CEO $10 million dollars a year... I bet that kinda stuff really drains the research budget.
Well that is an interesting question... I think a good way to answer that would be to look at history and see how much it would have changed things if we would have had CCTVs everywhere before.
Think of how difficult it would have been for blacks in the south to organize anti-segregation rallies if the cops would have known the leaders whereabouts at all times. Mayor FUD would have just deployed either some cops, or just any pissed off rednecks to whereever these people went to disrupt them.
Would any blacks have escaped the south if they had 2000 CCTVs along every road before the civil war?
I think that having CCTVs would have affected EVERY previous important development in the history of world. And most of them, it would have affected adversely.
I don't know if CCTVs are a good idea or bad, but they definately change things. We may be to a point where the risk of our government is less than the risk from criminals, but if you think the choice is easy, man, you need some read some history books.
Looks like a pretty decent game. I never heard of it and its in a genre that a really like. Anyone got a link to a place where we can download a build?
You (the recipient) put a value (say $10) on incoming mail from strangers.
Holy crap! Like $10 ?!? Of course that sounds outrageous... Of course no person, (except people who hate all advertings, all the time) is going to have that kind of escrow. For me, maybe a quarter. I could make opening spam a full time job at $.25/spam mail. And guess what, I bet know one who knew me would worry about the quarter escrow, even people who didnt know me.
That being said: I'm with you on the infrastructure thing. Even if the infrastructure was managable, the day of having anonymous stupid email addresses would be over as soon as money started changing hands. I mean, you would probably have to give a credit card # just to get an email account.

Yeah that would be great, especially if you danced around and sang 'Billie Jean' =\
