  2. In a network, breaking a link can't hurt them much on EU's Mind 'made up' on Microsoft · · Score: 1

All Microsoft stuffs are all linked together. Arguing that a link between two components needs to be broken has no real effect in practice (be it windows and the media player or IE). The first point is that legal decision like such are so slow that by the time it occurs, Microsoft would have the time to build 10 other links Second, trying to convince people the media player (or IE) is so bad (assuming it is true) does not hurt in the long run. Because, as soon as people really start switching, a (small; relatively to Microsoft scale) effort to improve their (bad) product. And the improvement will last untill people will get back to "normal" and wonder why the hell they were willing to change. "Microsoft is not that bad after all, they are improving their stuff". The real issue is the whole network effect which they master for a long time now. For those who missed it years ago, have a look (or second look with perspective) at From Microsoft Word to Microsoft World

  3. Re:Hmmm... on Freenet Project Taking Donations · · Score: 1

The fact is that even when you have free speech granted, the society we live in is such that you sometime have interest to use your right in an anonymous manner. This is because you may speak against some people's opinion. These people, regardless of your right, may do their best to find you and "remove" you ability to speak. ("what the point of a phone call if you are unable to speak?" ;)
Freenet is important in that respect in that it let you exerce your right in an anonymous way.
Despite the belief of many people, being on the Internet will become less and less anonymous. In some country (eg: Belgium), ISPs HAVE TO keep record of who used which IP address when for as long as 12 months... This may question the legality of using Freenet in these countries.
One should not see freenet as an iceland when you can exerce free speech, as unlike in the physical world, the internet can be available "everywhere".
Well, the more I write, the more it seems simplistic view, but anyway, freenet looks like the best project toward its goals today.

  4. For how long do they plan the player to be ported? on Microsoft Plans Media Player for Linux? · · Score: 1
Come on! This is not bad at the short term. Actually, this is a win-win (we are able to listen to microsoft media stuff and they get more market share and eventually market dominance).

On the longer run, once they have market dominance, they can establich lock-ins and stop porting the latest and greatest player (or delay it enough to make it annoying) to "force" people to move to windows.

For me, there is only one solution: they release the spec of the media. So linux player can be made by the community. This may delay a player to be available, but it will be avilable as long as they keep releasing format updates.

  5. AOL needs to reply on Microsoft to "publish code" to Instant Messenger · · Score: 1

Now, it is time for AOL to go a step further and to publish the source code of (at least) the protocol communication routines of their messager program.
Open source with request to acknowledge the use of an AOL code derivative (in any product which uses it). This would make AOL advertisement in the MS application if they use the code. This is better than having MS reverse ingeneering the protocol and giving no credit to aol in their messager.

It is unclear to me (and to the etrade trader as well) whether I should have entered a separate order for the non affinity program in case there were not enough shares allocated for affinity program participants.

  10. CivCTP slow on my PC on CivCTP Patch Released · · Score: 1

I run CivCTP on a plain Celeron 300 with 128Mb ram and an AcceleratedX server on a matrox G200 AGP. It is quite slow: the CPU is loaded at an average 75% when the game does (apparently) nothing but animation; this is apparently a display related problem as the cpu-load of the X server is high as the cpu-load of the game). Do you see it slow too? Do you know how to speed it? Probably unrelated my sound board is a Turtle Beach Fiji (not OSS compatible and therefore not supported). I did not apply the patch yet.
