That's about all I need, and I am willing to go... I think it's an 9 month journey, so my monkeys will have time to breed, and when we hit Mars I can start my own ape civilization... With me as their benevolent dictator! Muahahaha! Then I shall have my monkeys fling poo at the earth!
Additionally when I amass enough monkeys I can start working on some Shakespeare knockoffs, or a new secure version of Windows - which ever comes first.
This is probably going to equate me with the Stone Age, but I find both email and IM rather impersonal. I would rather get up, and walk the 10 feet to talk to the person directly. I find breaking the isolation gets better results.
*shrug*
Why cut out 70% of my communication abilities (read: body language). If something goes south on a project I can reinforce behavior with my 6'7 frame. *grin*
I can't believe someone hasn't mentioned Coast to Coast with Art Belle and George Nori.
If you are driving late at night, or heck snag the previous shows off his web site and burn them to disk, this show will knock your socks off.
Coast to Coast for the uninitiated covers everything from ghosts, fringe science, space travel, aliens, and conspiracies. I swear it's perfect to listen to while coding, drinking with buddies, or long drives.
Now excuse me while I hunker back into my Faraday's cage, and don my tin foil hat!
I get yelled at for loosing my frigg'n massive universal remote, now I have to worry about my music collection falling into the recesses of my couch?! Arg!
First, public schools are *not* that bad. As they say it takes a community to raise a child, and as such, it takes a community to educate them as well. Breaking the public education system into self serving private schools ruins that notion.
Second, remove distractions from learning. This breaks down into a couple of areas.
- There should be cell phone jammers school wide. There is zero reason to have them on during class (especially with the damn text messaging!).
- Remove the massive pressure to standardized test (*cough* Texas) - stop teaching for the tests.
Third, have parents involved! God knows how many parents my friends (who are teachers) have seen that treat school as a baby sitter. Conversely have the parents recognize their children have strengths and weaknesses and are not always super brilliant rock stars. If little Jimmy can not form complex sentences as a 9th grader, having the parents scream at the teacher for Jimmy's bad grades won't solve a thing.
Finally, reevaluate teaching credentials. As one poster mentioned, if the teacher cannot form a coherent note to the parents then one might want to prevent him from tainting the children. (yes I said taint, get over it).
