What?! I think if you are going around, shooting weddings, and making profit off of this grisly business, solid state drives are the least of your concerns. I would be more worried about things like: law enforcement, two families revenge, and Kaiser Sose.
In related news, you may want to do us all a favor and put down the violent video games. Thanks!
Side note, solid business model:
1. Shoot weddings
2. Take pictures of the shootings
3. Profit.
The IceMan, from HBO's Iceman confessions, would be proud.
When the Tamagatchi craze hit I was working in Target's toy department. I was constantly being harassed by customers (parents more so than kids), and bounced anyone who thought they could wander in the back stock room. I had a fist full of complaints against me when people asked me (for the millionth time) "Where can I find a Tamagatchi?", I would point behind me and reply "Over there - the empty shelves in the shadow of the three foot by four foot sign that says TAMAGATCHI!" Morons !:)
How about LOGO or just good ol' ClarisWorks? God knows how many times I had to use those in 4th grade!
Another missing item from years ago (rather low tech though) - card catalogs at libraries! How fun were those! I mastered it quickly, then the next year bam - computer indexing! Booo!
AOL 1.0: The digital porn foundation! Using a nice 1400 baud external Hayes modem and giggling with glee as my buddy and I started email lists from chat room names and watched the porn flood in. I swear we might have invented spam!
My most missed was Nike Pumps. The genius that added inflatable balloons inside shoes was a true man of genius!
I am not so sure about certs - I never saw the point, but as it sits right now I am wondering if my four year university degree was worth the student loans!
I graduated with a Comp. Sci. BS from a Nebraska university two years ago, and I am barely at where I want to go. At the time: excelled at the classes I took (mainly programming c++, java, cobol, and perl), went out and obtained a side minor of Native American studies, and was planning on going to grad school for AI and complex adaptive agents. Due to financing I opted to not go massively in debt for my masters or PhD, and started to move up in the company I worked for. I worked up to a managerial level in a call center, then hopped the wall to our software testing team. Another guy and myself are the only two in the department of 40ish people that have IT degrees. I took the job in hopes of bouncing to the programming department, but I still had to stop and meekly say "Ouch!" at the prospects. I wonder if it was worth the four years of university to be where I am or could I have just gone and snatched up a bunch of certs and a two year technical degree. Would I be in a different boat or just the same situation two years earlier?
The new dilemma is to peruse a masters degree or get another BS through a technical college in a year or so in "computer information systems technology" (read: programming specific). Would anyone care to comment on the use of a masters' degree over another BS or a barrel full of certs?
Bah! Comp Sci. light + Business light = MIS. I took MIS classes, delt with MIS people, and all I see is this.
Concepts are wonderful and fun for a majority of the time, but if you only focus on the concepts you are missing the majority of the "experience generating" activities. The word activities then implies you have to be specific. Hence why one would have to be trained in a "specific OS" or programming language, or what have you. As my Grandpa was one to say "the rubber needs to meet the road", else you will just churn out a bunch of flunkies that have wonderful concepts but lack action abilities. What's the point of conceptulizing what you can not act out? I could read a grip of books on welding, draw out the process, and visualize it in my mind, but if I don't enteract with the tools then my time was wasted.
Actually, yes, do this... I would rather be the one SHOWING my abilities than just TALKING about them. I will further entrench my net worth and skill sets in my company, and make billions! *evil laughter*
Seriously, if I graduated from an university that taught me only concepts I would be pissed and demand my money back.
I would like someone to do a study on the alternative sources of violent affirmation.. Multiple combat theaters with mommy or daddy going off to fight, constant reminder to *not*be*like*Columbine*, hyper aggressive life styles (read: fast paced corporate ladder structures), Power Rangers (their solution was always to fight and if need be gang up with similar people to crush the non conformist), and so forth.
Additionally I am certain some of this violent ACTIONS are linked to the lack of parents putting their kids in check. Case in point, that 'sweet 16' show on MTV. It shows 15-to-be-16 year olds having massively extravagant (to the tune of $80,000+) birthday parties. These kids are all massively aggressive, which is just fueled by their parents bowing to ever whim of the kid. One girl waxed about how much fun it was to have "power over" her classmates by dangling an invitation in front of them. It seems the lack of direction or understanding the rules of normal civilization allow kids to act with out care for consequences.
Cause and effect are great to teach, but if you don't stress effect modifies (read: consequences), then the kid will pick which effect causes the greatest self satisfaction.
Sure, here I will pay you for your time. What, you say it's $13.00 per month for two months? Fine, I have your $26.00 riiiight here. *crotch pointing motion*
Of course one could go the other way. For the sake of example, here's the numbers. Assuming you pay $13.00 a month for unlimited access, and there are 720 hours in a month (24 hours a day by 30 days a month). By my calculations it is: 0.0180 $$/hour. Show me how many hours you put into your character and I will multiply it by $0.018. As my dad was know to say "Don't spend it all in one place!"
I initially bought my PC for my children with the good intentions of helping them in school. I had no idea they would witness penetration of this magnitude. There was penetration of their PC, penetration in their friends' houses, and penetration of major corporations. Penetration was running rampant. This lawsuit will follow the righteous path set by Senator Clinton against the 'hot coffee' crack. If we don't draw the line in the sand to stop virus penetration in front of innocent children who will? Senator Clinton thinks of the children, so should you. Call you congressmen and congressional women to stop virus penetration today!
I would have to disagree. I give a large damn about FPS that are NOT multiplayer. Things like 'No One Lives Forever's are shining examples of great game play. Additionally 'Return to Castle Wolfenstein', 'Doom3', Deus Ex', 'Thief' (all of them), 'Aliens vs. Predator's and so on all have one amazing quality that multiplayer games don't - a story. Games are more than just gib/frag/0wnZ fests that attempt to cram as much realistic blood and polygons as possible on the screen. Games are a way to interact with a story, a world, and a plot in a manner that the developers are trying to get across. Case in point 'American McGee's Alice' was a scintillating game, where the story was supported by the graphics and sound. I am constantly angered by games that ignore the story of any sorts. I am all for player interaction, but tell me the wheres/whys/whos. To make a comparison - how fun would WoW be if there was nothing but PVP battles? "Man - it's like all about wasting those nasty orks/alliance people. Yea, I don't care for much background, but just enough to make me 0WNZ them!:
I see multiplayer FPS moving towards a soulless future full of maps, rocket launchers, and vehicles. We have all seen what happens to media sources that loose the ability to tell a story - 800 reality show variants and a crappy movies on the big screen.
If any game developers are out there reading this, don't chose the wrong path. Give your games life - write the stories and tell them with the game. *cough* if you need help drop me a line...
Much against my personal policy of letting trolls feed themselves, I have to respond to this comment. Yes Africa does have quite a few problems, but that wouldn't have occurred if the system of government (read: apartheid style) was such a success in segregation. The system was designed, and aggressively engaged in, for the dehumanization of the people there. When the ruling groups left - they left a power vacuum of great magnitude and a broken down system.
Now, don't try yelling "shifting the blame" or "revisionist history", because all I am doing is providing the proper cause of their problems instead of generalizing after the fact.
Now that I am done with my corrections, I am going to go wander and register.xxx domain names! Ha!
They say the depression sets in post the first two weeks of space-novelty, and I can tell you why. "Freddy Got Fingered" was only fun the first 15 times, but after that - ugg!
Seriously, I wonder what they do for entertainment? Lan parties? MMORPGs? Can bit torrent stream shows to them? Any answers would be welcomed!
Hi, how long do you think World of Warcraft will sustain its momentum before users drift off and the servers shut down? I understand that 'never' would be a perferable answer, but did you guys plan on having this around for a long time (will my kids be playing WoW in 20 years)? Was there a long term "indefinate" plan set up before the launch of the game, of if not what thought/actions for this possibility?
Thank you.
I am quite pleased to hear there is a bit of 'street justice' being dealt upon spammers. The great news is my family who runs on AOL actually receives very little spam. Sure I get two or three emails in my 'spam' folder, but truthfully I get close to zero spam over all. AOL can really toot their own horn for how effective they have been. Compared to a few years back when I had to check my box three or four times a day, and spend five minutes deleting crap, I am elated. I think the tides are turning folks.
Side question, how does Blue Frog respond to spoofed return addresses? Do they try to ascertain the correct 'sent' address instead of the 'reply' address? Has anyone complained of being flooded with replies from Blue Frog when it really was not their fault?
By Odin's Raven, I am confused. What's the link to "post 9/11 world" to "online predators, viruses, and terrorists attacks"? Oh wait, yes, I remember. Pre 9/11 the internet was all roses, unicorns, and cotton candy. Give me a break. I get the need for supervision, but don't try to tack it 9/11 as if when the towers fell the Black Gates of Mordor opened up to a flood of "online evils".
I am going to hope this was just a mis-thought, but I can not let it slide without comment.
This article (towards the end) has way too much focus on the technology aspect of learning. I would like everyone's attention at this wonderful quote:
"There's no research that [using a laptop] will ramp up academic achievement beyond adequate desktop access at school and at home," he said.
I started to have major problems when the article quoted Jeff Mao (coordinator of educational technology for the Maine Learning Technology Initiative):
"The goal was to put the device into the hands of the student at the point of learning as defined by the student, so that it got away from the old model of 'hey kids, let's go to the computer lab so we can use the Internet now. Then we'll go back to the classroom and stop learning with the computer,'"
I am in strict belief that there SHOULD be separation of computer time versus in classroom learning. There are many different crucial things lost when you plunk a kid in front of a computer: attention, focus, authority structure, memorization, and so forth. Particularly I have seen this in the work place when giving a presentation; capable adults jacking around with the PC instead of focusing on the talk. Innate respect for the setting is slipping. Make math's time math'stime, and make math+computer time something special.
Second quote that stuck out for me:
"Today's kids are totally different. The world they live in is different, and the more we can break down the difference between their life inside the classroom and outside the classroom, the better," he [Jeff Mao] said.
Wow. I have an army of teachers that prayed I kept my inside/outside classroom behavior to a minimum (let's say the principal and I got to know each other really well). I am a staunch supporter of separation of duties - much like in the work place. I work from 8-5, and anything beyond that is my time. I am talking boundaries here people!
I don't see what is wrong with a computer lab just being a computer lab, and a classroom being a classroom. If things become too blurred with computer technology then we are going to loose basics in the classroom: spelling, basic math by hand, structured thought, and a respect for authority and setting.
For those who didn't read into this worn out joke, there is indeed a technology indictment for once. Letting technology dominate us at such a level people are freaking out over *little things* like time changes and what not...
We all know the best thing out of the first space race was Tang and Velcro. I for one cannot wait until a Military Arms Race in Space (M.A.R.S. for short) starts up, and Tang gets an upgrade! Everyone grab a big glass of the Orange Powder and let's toast to a fruitful new arms race!
Tsk... it sounds nice, but sorry bubs, your statement cannot float. When you start talking 'creator' then you MUST include backgrounds. It's hard to teach intelligent design when there are hundreds upon hundreds of STARTING POINTS. Well I guess you teach some sort of mad libs science class where one fills in the blanks, and the teacher spouts vauge fluff regarding design.
That's the whole thrust of the debate - how did everything start! To claim you can teach ID without a particular religous context is foolish.
Here's a thought for the creationism side... How far do you want to go with "equal time". Why must it be divided amongst only "creationists" and "scientists". As an individual with a Native American Studies minor I will chime in for their cause - I want equal time for tribal creation stories - ALL of them (and yes there are MANY varients). Additionally I have friends that would appreciate Wiccan or nature based creation stories. Oh, don't forget the Norse (the non-white supremacist kind) they want their share. Additionally I guess I can toss in Hindu, the plethora of Eastern views, and possibly the Jewish variant.
The problem with the creationist side is this isn't always a battle of who is right, it's a battle of time. Do we really want schools to de-evolve (joke intended) into 7.5 hours of creation stories, 0.5 hours of math, reading, grammar, and so forth?
clarification.. by "this site" I meant the dating site.. no/. The Man Jesus only knows that if/. started a dating section it would cripple the IT infrastructure..
