Take a gander at Defrag mod... it may change your opinion of what speed runs really are about. You'll find plenty of excellent examples of people stretching the Quake 3 engine to its limits not to mention beautiful control and timing.
So in reality, people working in the technology field came along with the other Golgafrinchans on the B Ark... hairdressers, plumbers, telephone sanitizers, executive assistants, and florists.
That's a comforting thought.

As far as recommending a beginner a game to play online, I would say one of the Unreal games might be in order. The game engine and weapons are a bit more forgiving than some of the more realistic games. Basically, for the most part if you're aiming at a person and push the fire button you should hit them.
No matter what game you play, here's some general advice:
Don't get discouraged. At first, you will be taking your lumps no matter what game you choose.
Look for servers that have a reasonable ping (you'll never have fun on a server you're pinging 1000ms on).
Frequent said servers until you find one with a decent "crowd". All servers are visited by the occasional moron, but you can usually find a server with some friendly regulars.
Most important of all, remember it's just a game and have fun.

Why not have Real and Apple ship their x86 OS'es with WMP in return?
