i like to tinker too, but after i found portage to be so simple (emerge kde) and powerful (useflags), i started to find it annoying to chase dependancies, do./configure ; make ; make install myself, etc.
Now i have more time to tinker with more interesting stuff.

just thought i'd point out something about package management:
I used to use slackware, and was all for compiling software by hand, then i installed gentoo and its package management system is amazing (far, far better than windows) - it even has a gui (porthole) which my gf uses to install/upgrade stuff.
I loved slackware, but i could never use it again on my desktop.
Your wrong. If Internet Explorer were not the dominant browser (lets say 40% firefox, 40% opera, 20% IE, just for simplicity), then web pages would have to work in all browsers, microsoft specific extentions would be no more, microsoft would lose one of its claws in its desktop monopoly.
Yes, i have kde set to open my exe's in wine, my sega megadrive and nes games under their respective emulators, and my gf's computer has c64 games associated with vice.
i'd just like to point out to the grandpairent that the gentoo install guide is very usable and very straightforward, its not like your typical manpage.
just thought i'd point that out incase the pairent sounded like a typical RTFM response
before i start, id just like to point out that im completely ignorant to any OS that isn't windows or linux, anyway...
wouldn't the useflags in gentoo make it possible to buld a more secure system, for example, if kde were compiled with no pdf support, it wouldn't have suffered from any of the few venrabilities announced this last week.
Before anybody starts, i know kde isn't likely to be found on a server, i was using it as an example. What im saying is, does solaris's package tools have something similar to useflags or not?

and what about linux doesn't 'work'?

so i bought an xbox with no games for no reason then?
HP (presumably they worked on the drive side of things) are a member of the OSDL, so maybe.
A lot of people read the register, a lot of potential apple customers. If apple were to sue the register, they'd never live that down.
In even more news, Microsoft has been granted a patent on "a method to say 'observez votre dos' in english"

Its the phrase of the week. My phrase of the week is a single word "flibble"
(ive been using it in testing plans and stuff)
Your "if it looks good in lynx" theory made me feel a lot better about my website design, thanks.
no, there's part of the installer script that does
if `whoami`=root { moan and exit }
if you comment that out, it runs fine (not that i run windows apps as root.....)
but doesn't wine by default have access to / as its z drive (i may be completely wrong with that)

good point.
is there something stopping you from doing what a lot of sites do and do this (not necesarily with all three):
WMV HI AVI HI RM HI
WMV LO AVI LO RM LO
Forgive my complete ignorance, but i thought sqlite could only handle one simultanious transaction?
im wrong, aren't i???
i see you have forked the english language
YEAH!!! lets fork slashdot into a pro-windows website and call it \.
I haven't looked, but theyre probably running Windows XP on the gateway machine to keep their network secure.
The webserver's probably running on openBSD
im sure you only need a license for encoders (which is why lame is "lame aint an mp3 encoder" or something like that)
playback of mp3's is already legal, encoding them is dubious.
I didn't say i belived them all, infact 4 is possible but i dont believe it.
Would you trust somebody who used theft and deciet throughout their career to not have ulterior motives?
Im just undecided on which of the first three (although im leaning toward beliving its because of the tax breaks)
You misspelt "" as "perhaps"

Because i wouldn't trust anybody who wears a borg outfit, in a photoshoot for slashdot.
