  2. too easy to break the system on Texas to Provide Online 'Bordercams' · · Score: 1

personally, I am against closing the borders. our country was, is, and probably will always find its unique strength in the diversity of its people. not to mention, the "original" americans (other than the native americans) were illegal immigrants, etc, etc. (we've all heard that logic, and its all very true). anyway, all an organization has to do to break the system is hire a small group of people to call in a series of false alarms. send the authorities to the middle of nowhere, many times, and then they'll stop accepting calls. if the authorities "fact-check" the callers watch the footage (if they're smart enough), then just hire more people to call and give vague times (like, "oh somewhere between 4 and 5 pm, not sure, but there were a LOT of people"). then, they'll have to watch TONS of footage just to see nothing. rinse, repeat.

why not just .mbl its the traditional 3 character lenght and it actually pronounces "mobile" (sort of). this "mobi" is just way too chatch-phrasey however, I do agree with the CSS idea. its simple, clean, and effective. and not to mention prevents a massive domain squatting problem everytime another TLD is introduced.

Are you on crack?! The OCTOGON?! You compare real life and death fighting to the friggin OCTOGON? A true martial art is about preparing yourself against a mortal enemy (other than the spirit/lifestyle stuff of course). You think those octo-prize fighters would last a minute if there weren't any rules about crushing someones throat in a single hit and killing them? wow, you are seriously mistaken as to what a real fight is about.

  6. spectrum vs steps on Evidence of the Missing Link Found? · · Score: 1

I really hate all these statements about spectrum vs steps of evolution. YES. evolution (if its true) occurs as a continuous spectrum. BUT. there is no way for us to ever perceive this spectrum as one. we can only see specific samples of it, and thus must classify these samples as descrete steps. for example, take random samples of the COLOR SPECTRUM. pick red, greed, orange, and blue. lets say that is all we know of the spectrum. if we believe the "spectrum" exists, then there must also be a "missing link" called yellow between orange and green. it is a continuous transition, but we classify it as a descrete steps to differentiate it from the others. so please, stop this nonsense about continuity or discrete steps you're all talking about the SAME THING!

i agree, but my point (along with many others here) is that MTA/lawyers must enforce this in order to insure consistency. They should allow the eMaps to continue distribution, but under a conditional licence with certain restrictions.

  9. Re:I grew up in NYC on NYC & SF iPod Subway Map Controversy · · Score: 1

This isn't true at all. I ride every day, and I've picked up MANY maps. Off the top of my head, I've been denied a map maybe 1/10 times... and that's not bad because they were during weekends/holidays.

As for the copyright/lawyer issue, the sense is in keeping legitimate/updated versions of their subways. Since you grew up here, you should know that the subway systems change occasionally. For example, there is no longer a 9 line, its just the 1 now. Lets say NYIPODMAP CO. never updates their info. MTA could have a number of unhappy customers because they're using what they think is a sanctioned/licenced copy.

This is partially a shameless plug, but there is also some incredible things we can do with VR in terms of social science/psychology research.

just image any research where you have to record video/audio and then hire a bunch of psych 1 students to encode what they see for analysis (which is EXREMELY BIASED). now with VR, we can just record the position/orientation of the subject and use statistical methods (i.e. SPSS+MatLab) to crunch numbers (completely unbiased). Where I work, we have come up with some exciting discoveries.
