Everytime I see one of these news items it makes me wonder if/.'ers really know what linux is about.
The linux kernel itself is not made to be different for every different distro, except that different distro's use different versions (some older and some more bleeding edge). But it's purpose is the same, that is to provide access to hardware and memory for programs that live on top of it.
In any case what we need is more choice and less consolidation. What you have with consolidation is stagnation (winxp/macosx). As long as the GPL is valid, people will have the choice to make their own tools for their (linux) operating systems. I'm sorry if all the distro's are too confusing for your stupid ass.
I agree we need a consolidation, of idiots and dumbasses who write these articles so that we can identify and cloister them into an access group on/. who don't have access to submit or post such stories.
you miss the point.
Most developers working on *custom applications* in linux do it for their own needs. Not for end users. After all this entire thread is about the various user interfaces available for X which run on top of linux. In any case it's not just linux which is affected but all other *nixes and BSD's which are capable of running X.
..because the developers (who are working in their spare time) don't care about the desktop. Linux is created for power users and it fits the bill (usually). Everything else is unimportant.
Now there are some distributions like Ubuntu which are trying to make it easy to use and interoperate with linux on the desktop. I don't exactly understand their business model but they have money to pay developers to do boring tasks like make the UI easy to use and to make it easy to interoperate with osx and windows.
If you're in the oil/gis/structural biology/medical fields and you need to load gigabytes to terrabytes of volumetric data and visualize it in realtime you go SGI..try doing that on a cluster of x86's
our 2003 southeast conference robot entry, I mean exactly like ours. We had two basic stamp's on the multi level platforms, two wheels, and the shape was identical. Sorry I don't have pictures.
What Is the Universe Made Of? No we don't know what dark matter is, that's why it's called dark.
What is the Biological Basis of Consciousness? If you could solve this you would in essence be "God". The sum of the parts is greater than the whole, and because we tend to determine the workings of all the parts, it's difficult for any one person or persons to see the big picture.
How Much Can Human Life Span Be Extended? For as long as the brain can hold out.
How Can a Skin Cell Become a Nerve Cell? This won't be answered in the US..probably in S. Korea.
How Does Earth's Interior Work? Ever watch The Core?
Are We Alone in the Universe? "If we were, it would be an awful waste of space"
Is an Effective HIV Vaccine Feasible? Not if the pharmaceutical companies have anything to say about it!!
How Hot Will the Greenhouse World Be? What you mean you can't tell right now?
What Can Replace Cheap Oil -- and When? The US is the world's largest grower of corn. It can provide enough *biodiesel* for the entire US and then some. The oil cartels and the politicans (e.g. Bush) who have alot to lose if we switch to biodiesel fear this. So government pays corn farmers money (called subsidies) to underproduce or burn excess crop. Granted biodiesel does burn at a higher temperature and would require modification of engine components (probably would be more expensive initially), but in the long run this would be much cheaper for everyone. Currently companies such as Cummins and its subsidiaries are looking into biodiesel.
George Bush has never made it a secret exactly what his views on society are. He is a conservative, just as he was WHEN HE WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT.
Nothing could be further from the truth. A conservative president going to war without the approval of congress? Not once but twice? Puts a whole new meaning to the word conservative!!!!
My idea of fair use is a majority of the royalties actually going to support the artists and the studio producers not the execs and RIAA/MPAA. So if piracy takes money out of those bullies' pockets then so be it.
I installed win2k sp1 on a university lab machine (we have some software which we need that only operates on win2k). I protected it during the install and update period with a belkin router acting as a firewall. After everything was patched and the mcafee was in operation i took the firewall off and connected the computer directly into the wall rj-45 (fingers crossed of course).
LND est ~1995?, RiSC(ISO) est ~1995?, and Myth est 1998.
LND = Legends Never Die is a group that releases the ripped version of applications from CD's and DVD's (e.g. autocad, photoshop, etc). I guess they are dead now, but they may surprise the Feds yet.
RiSCISO = is the ISO division (or a group that releases the full unripped CD/DVD version of high end applications, e.g. autocad with all the plugins and documentation left intact) of Rise In Superior Couriering. Couriering is the competition of moving files as quickly as possible between sites frequented by other couriers.
Myth = this group releases ripped versions of games from the CD/DVD's without music, cut scene movies, and of course the annoying CD protection. This group was formed from what was Paradigm and some other group..i forget. Vengeance (VGN) was a couriering group as well.
They may have arrested only 4 people, but that doesn't mean they didn't search and seize computers from 100's of locations. Being searched does not necessarily mean that you are put under arrest.

"The secret payment or allowance of rebates, refunds, commissions, or unearned discounts, whether in the form of money or otherwise, or secretly extending to certain purchasers special services or privileges not extended to all purchasers purchasing upon like terms and conditions, to the injury of a competitor and where such payment or allowance tends to destroy competition, is unlawful."

uhhh...all you have to do is download vlc 0.8.2 apply the diff patch http://code.google.com/vlc-diff.txt and then configure and make the program and it becomes in essence the same as google video player.
but i guess you don't know anything about compiling and or use a binary only linux distribution.

Something very similar was posted to /. a while ago.

in linux it's the black screen of death or kernel panic. Just as in windows it happens because of bad drivers.
thank god for ndiswrapper

Why doesn't AMD release their own compiler? They could easily fork a gcc release and open source it.

My desktop of the future runs linux+vmware or some other emulator. Processors are getting faster by the quarter as are the emulators.
Translucent UI has been part of windows since Win2K. See Glass2K.

I'm sure most states have a similar clause.

extraordinarily low temperatures on titan? You mean like at 1-2 miles below sea level where millions of microbes live happily?
