Why is there "no place for them in a modern society?" If people can live together, pay less money, take care of each other, and work enough to enjoy life, what's wrong with that? The only people benefiting from people moving out at 20 or whatever are the real estate industry and employers -- desperate 20 somethings are more likely to put up with long working hours and short vacay times.
Uhhh, 99% cars made today have a steering shaft connecting the steering rack and steering wheel. The power steering/assistance may be electric instead of hydraulic, but (thankfully) there's a mechanical backup. The shafts are jointed to collapse in a crash -- there's no risk of "impalement."
Accountability is not a positive -- it's a negative. Why should we have to account for everything we buy and sell to a corporation or government? Anonymity and privacy == freedom.
The interesting part is that there's a huge market for Buicks and Caddies in China -- they're seen as unscale status symbols, not mundane American brands. Maybe they're made there because they can sell more in China (and avoid their tariffs) than in the US.
Disagree. I don't need a smartphone to hail a taxi. Built-in equipment (i.e. my hand) will do. I can pay cash and not have my origin and destination tied to a name, CC#, email, phone, and address in a database. True, I might be photographed, but facial recognition isn't typically used for those photos unless a crime was committed.
If you have access to voice phone, you probably have access to Internet. Who says you need a middleman in the loop? All you really need to do is to publish your network's dynamic IP somewhere. The "middleman" knows the IP number AND NOTHING ELSE. The actual connection is done peer-to-peer, via an open port (ideally an encrypted SSL tunnel) from your phone's web browser or an app to your home.
What's wrong with getting lost? It's part of the fun of life -- if you stay on pre-programmed routes all the time, you never see or experience anything new or unusual. Baw-ring!
This could also be done peer-to-peer, with your phone talking to a smart home controller in your home directly. No Amazon/cloud/spyware middleman needed.
As far as hitting a light switch, what's wrong with simply turning off the lights when you leave home, or even flipping a few breakers (anything but fridge and HVAC) if you go on vacay?
I'm far from a far rightist. Just saying that superstitions have their uses.
Pond scum are actually useful -- they make O2 from CO2. These employees, less so..
Yes. I grew up in a town with no busing (in the US). Going back there, you still see 2nd or 3rd graders walking to grade school.

In Germany they pay YOU to be a student. In the US, you pay through the nose to be a student :)
Italy :D
What's property tax, PMI, fire/home insurance, utilities, maintenance?
Hopefully, then the far-right Christian crowd will start a revolt. i.e. "it's the mark of the Beast!"

Because in some countries, a lot of stores are going cashless. You may not have the choice.

Any outage that can affect ATMs could also mess with credit card verification. At least if people hold cash, those that have cash can still transact.
Not if you carry cash like any freedom-loving human being should.
The taxi cameras I've seen are generally crappy and record to local storage.

In older medical parlance, "growth" was the polite word for "tumor." It fit.
It's always "different this time," until it's not. Popcorn. Beer.

They're not "smart speakers." They're "connected listeners". Aka bugs for your home.
OK, you're special. None of this makes having a bug in your house a good idea for the average, able-bodied person.

"Calculator", "Apps", "Reminders" are pocket-computer/PDA stuff. They could theoretically work even without a data connection.
If it's important enough that you need to reach someone NOW, call. Emails and texts are for response if and when it's convenient.
