Why is there "no place for them in a modern society?" If people can live together, pay less money, take care of each other, and work enough to enjoy life, what's wrong with that? The only people benefiting from people moving out at 20 or whatever are the real estate industry and employers -- desperate 20 somethings are more likely to put up with long working hours and short vacay times.

Uhhh, 99% cars made today have a steering shaft connecting the steering rack and steering wheel. The power steering/assistance may be electric instead of hydraulic, but (thankfully) there's a mechanical backup. The shafts are jointed to collapse in a crash -- there's no risk of "impalement."

Disagree. I don't need a smartphone to hail a taxi. Built-in equipment (i.e. my hand) will do. I can pay cash and not have my origin and destination tied to a name, CC#, email, phone, and address in a database. True, I might be photographed, but facial recognition isn't typically used for those photos unless a crime was committed.

They're not "smart speakers." They're "connected listeners". Aka bugs for your home.

  20. OK, you're special. None of this makes having a bug in your house a good idea for the average, able-bodied person.

  21. If you have access to voice phone, you probably have access to Internet. Who says you need a middleman in the loop? All you really need to do is to publish your network's dynamic IP somewhere. The "middleman" knows the IP number AND NOTHING ELSE. The actual connection is done peer-to-peer, via an open port (ideally an encrypted SSL tunnel) from your phone's web browser or an app to your home.

  22. What's wrong with getting lost? It's part of the fun of life -- if you stay on pre-programmed routes all the time, you never see or experience anything new or unusual. Baw-ring!

  23. This could also be done peer-to-peer, with your phone talking to a smart home controller in your home directly. No Amazon/cloud/spyware middleman needed.

As far as hitting a light switch, what's wrong with simply turning off the lights when you leave home, or even flipping a few breakers (anything but fridge and HVAC) if you go on vacay?

  24. "Calculator", "Apps", "Reminders" are pocket-computer/PDA stuff. They could theoretically work even without a data connection.

  25. If it's important enough that you need to reach someone NOW, call. Emails and texts are for response if and when it's convenient.
