  2. The problem is that autonomous cars need maps with this level of detail in the first place. A truly autonomous car should be able to integrate data from a basic map (i.e. line drawing of how streets connect converted to a node diagram in a database), GPS, street markings, and the outside environment in order to get from points A to B. After all, non-autonomous drivers do this with a set of less-than-perfect cameras and microphones, not even with IR cameras or microwave radar.

$5000 fine might be worth paying, depending on the circumstances, if the alternative is jail or loss of corporate secrets. Way around this is either an erased phone or an SD card with a smaller capacity stamped on it with plus an encrypted partition on the remainder. If what's on the unencrypted partition is innocuous, this should stand up to a casual search at least.

If there's a hand on your face, any good facial recognition system would fail to unlock due to the possibility of outside interference. If Apple's doesn't, it should be updated to stay locked. There should also be an "emergency expression" (say mouth to one side, nostrils flared) that says "wipe it all with prejudice."

  7. The WiFi landing page accepts any email address (i.e. fuckyougoogle@fuckgoogle.org works fine) without verification. Combined with a MAC address randomizer, tracking might be a wee bit difficult.

Want to really fix crime? (a) stop criminalizing victimless crimes like personal drug use and sex between consenting adults. (b) don't create an economic environment with lack of opportunity that doesn't allow people other options.

  19. Got news for you: most businesses still accept cash. In the NYC boroughs, many of the same drivers that drive for the "rideshare" firms also operate under regular taxi ("black car") brands and can be used for a lower cash payment than when you pay through Goober or Lyft.
