  1. You mean manufacturers aren't allowed to cut notches on their phones when they take another aspect of a user's privacy? Movement privacy = one notch. Health info = second notch ...

Yes. I'd rather side with so-called "criminals" than with authoritarians. At least "criminals" don't have absolute power.

The ability to riot, strike, and shut down a country means that a government doesn't have absolute power -- this is a feature, not a bug.

  3. Getting something for your tax money is terrible, right?

  4. WW2 was 75 years ago.

Civil War was 163 years ago. Also, it was as much about establishing Federal domination as about freeing the slaves. Freeing the slaves was good. Setting a precedent that states were tied to the US for eternity was a bad idea.

Revolutionary War? Sometimes I think the US would have been better off as a British dominion.

Right. The Constitution says one thing, various governments in the US do another.

Excessive bail is common. So are people being jailed to bully them into a plea bargain. Bye-bye, 5th Amendment. Internal "border" checkpoints can search you and your car at random -- whoops! There goes the Fourth. Right to property. Civil forfeiture anyone?

"Freedom" in the US is a cruel joke unless you're rich.

  6. No one actually pays $7500/yr, though -- it's typically closer to "free" due to grants and the Empire scholarship.

  7. You're still volunteering to support US imperialism and enabling the US government's massive waste of money on wars abroad.

  8. Regardless, that's probably against the card companies' TOS. Can't wait for the firm to be hammered with lawsuits.

  9. Murder ... unlawful killing, malice aforethought. War qualifies especially when you're talking about international law.

War is abhorrent. Advising people to sign up to serve the biggest group of warmongers out there is abhorrent.

Even in the US, you're more likely to be hit by a car on the way home from school than encounter a spree shooter.

  11. Name, credit card #, CVN, and EXP? Can't wait till they're on the hook for a massive credit card fraud spree -- should be fun to watch them get sued into bankruptcy.

  12. Or you can buy fresh veggies, some rice, and your choice of protein source. Sauteing or stir-frying things is relatively healthy, cheap, and easy.

  13. Admin fees are like $500 a year in NY state. Housing is pretty cheap in many places if you live off campus. No $5000 hidden free like in Loosiana.

Yet you have more actual freedom in Europe, unless your idea of "freedom" is easily buying a gun, or being subject to the latest and greatest Internet surveillance tech.

Look to incarceration rates of the US vs European countries for an example of this. Look at insurance systems, where you're actually FREE to move between jobs, go to school, etc without threat of medical bankruptcy. Look at drinking ages in Europe vs the US. Hell, look at mass protests in Europe -- they're allowed to happen and aren't brutally smashed by police.

Economic freedom isn't the be-all and end-all of freedom -- there's also social freedom.

  16. Why was I modded Troll? Too many "patriots" afraid of admitting what the military is really used for?

Fact: the military's primary purpose is to kill. No way around it. And politicians are more likely to be psychopaths than most other professions.

Much better to take notes on dead trees -- aside from the usual distractions, too easy to get sucked down a rabbit hole of searches about something which the professors said which you found interesting. Save the tablet/phone for after class.

If you can't detach for a few hours, you're addicted.

  18. Most dorms also have kitchens, which few students actually use. If you have an apartment, it definitely has a kitchen. Cooking is cheap as well especially if you rotate between friends and share the meals.

  19. Depends where -- in NY state, public university tuition is maximum about $7500/yr for undergraduate in-state, and places outside of NYC are cheap to live in. This $7500/yr is also reduced by subsidies and grants, so it's not even really that much.

Nice to live in a state that actually gives a rip about its residents.

  20. GI bill. Yep. Good idea. Sign up to commit murder or be murdered at the whim of a bunch of psychopaths in DC. The military isn't a summer camp -- once you realize what it actually does, the idea becomes less attractive.
