Partially its because of the philosophy of the Open Source movement (as opposed to the Free Software Movement). The "best tool for the job" people promote the GNU system by calling it the best tool, and in their seal, they can oversell the system, getting expectations too high.
They get hostile when someone points out the system's vaults because from their point of view, there is no reason to use an inferior system.
If you take a person and tell him that GNU is the best thing sense sliced bread and it makes french fries in 4 different ways, inevitably he will hit a wall and say "wait a minute, this isn't so great".
If you take a person that values freedom and teach him about the GPL and the advantages of free software, that person is more likely to forgive the system its faults and work to improve it. Even if he doesn't install the GNU system, even if he just uses GPL software on windows, thats still a victory for our movement.
Corny Matrix Analogy: Sometimes being Free means having to eat the runny eggs/bowl of snot.
I like Yo La Tengo and Cat Power but i had no idea they were clean. Is there an easy way to check? Like a boycott search engine or something? Maybe there should be. People wont do it unless its simple.
As silly as this seems, for a banner campain to be even moderately successful, there needs to be a slogan. Something like "free kevin" or "burn all GIFs". Something simple; fewer syllables the better.
"It's elementary that laws don't decide right and wrong. Every American should know that, forty years ago, it was against the law in many states for a black person to sit in the front of a bus; but only racists would say sitting there was wrong." --Stallman
When longhorn was delayed I thought "horah, microsoft is loosing money", but they really aren't. They still get their $100 every time a computer is sold, if they write a new OS or not. For them, releasing a new OS is like a PR move.
People should be paid for their work, but clearly our system is broken when it comes to things that can easily be reproduced infinitely. The question is "what do we do about it"? Who foots the bill for something that benefits everyone? Is that why we have taxes?
It is impossible to make a living as a poet or real musician. Soon, it will be impossible to make a living as a fake musician.
Nobody is forcing him to make freenet. He is not driving a proprietary freenet out of busness, therefore this project has no effect on any economy. He chooses to live like a monk and work on this project, because he wants to.
I, for one, am tired of everyone comparing Free Software to Communism.
Windows World - Central control: a tyranny
GNU+linux - Distributed control: a democracy.
Its as simple as that.
I don't see how spam or telemarketing is a free speech issue any more then say, making a political speech with very loud speakers, in the middle of the night, while people are trying to sleep.

"Either way, you've got to ask your self: Am I a GPL zealot?"
Yup. And proud of it.
Cracking is not terrorism, communist subversion or witchcraft. Blackhat Cracking is cyber-vandalizm.
The RIAA are the cyber-terrorists.
Thank you. I put the link in my sig.

Be careful. Sometimes "independent" labels are just fronts for larger labels.
