  1. Re:Only here, apparently. on California Senate Passes Preemptive Strike Against Gmail · · Score: 1

But nobody is actually "reading" the e-mail message. That is a huge difference. The message is being scanned and ads based on the adwords technology are diplayed. Just like the ads we see at the top of this page, hotmail or any other free site we go to. The only difference is the ads are targeted to me based on word scans of the e-mail message. Again, the body of the message itself is not being read by something with any ability to decipher what its meaning is so that privacy thing is kind of moot. As for the storage and archival- that is the selling point behind G-Mail. To not have to delete your e-mail but be able to index and search it and find your email based on a completely new technology is what makes it so great. Again, nobody but software is "reading" it but only so it can perform the necessary archiving. Technology is scanning your mail message to your Aunt all ready. Anti-Spam, Anti-Virus and most likely anti-terrorist and I really don't think this is any different. It is important to understand how the targeted ads work and realize that nobody is profiling you and keeping track of what we talk to our chat room lovers about. At least I hope not. :-) Just another knee-jerk reaction to something that isn't understood and is being regulated before anyone takes the time to try to understand.

  2. Re:I expect... on Study: MP3 Sharing Not Serious Threat To CD Sales · · Score: 1

An apology would mean that the RIAA would have to admit that the reason record sales have dropped is because they are putting out crap. The 4 companies that produce the most music are all putting out the same manufactured stuff and it almost all stinks.

The biggest threat that the Internet & P2P has been to the music industry is that it has allowed the music buying population to find music and artists that they would have never been exposed to through our Clearchannel world of radio. These bands are not signed to one of the big four and therefore do not equate to money in their pockets.

Plus, the price point of $20 for a musical CD is ridiculous when you consider that a movie with a production cost of tens or hundreds of millions can be bought for less on DVD.

  3. Re: Evil Government Intrusion on Congress To Force Cable a la Carte Plans · · Score: 1

I agree with these concerns completely. It is the governments involvment that has things as screwed up as they are now. The government catered to the cable companies in their fight against satellite which gave the cable companies an unfair advantage. There were years when the sat companies could not carry local networks. There are still cable channels that the cable companies keep to themselves to maintain unfair advantages. Comcast for example has Comcast Sports Net in Philly that then proceeds to carry every Sixers, Phillies and Flyers game but it can never be viewed on sat. Then to make it worse, because they have TV rights, they force a black-out on the sports packages on Satellite so even if I buy the NBA season pass I can't see the game. Before you create even more regulation that I agree will most likely make things more expensive to most people (not to mention our tax money spent to fund it), we should be focusing on making competition easier. Sure, they deregulated cable but for the most part the majority of people still only have one option available to them.

How about the TV or radio just have what it is going to have and the audience determine what they want to watch and what they don't? My parents seemed to do a good job making sure I wasn't watching stuff a kid shouldn't see. I am doing the same as a parent now. Now in my 30s, I don't think I need someone, other than me, making that determination.

I have been fighting this one myself. I just ended up reinstalling my mother's PC from scratch to clean it before she got her broadband installed. Now that she has it, I am very scared. All of the software is a start but parents really need to be forced into educating themselves on what dangers exist. Without the awareness, you can't eliminate the risk. That is at least without setting them up on a Mac which has been suggested but the reality is, that will only be a temporary solution. Macs are becoming more common and given their base in BSD, have already been seen to be more vulnerable than previous versions.

I recently posted a link to This Article on my site. It is a security checklist for home users released by security focus. It provides very basic explanations for a number of home security issues.

I agree completely. It can't be that hard to pull this off with a computer. The human element that I have seen managing the voting booths out my way don't leave me with much of a warm fuzzy either.
